Kentucky Defeats Mississippi 26 to 23
Visitors Take Lead Once
The Wildcats are far from having reached perfection in passing, but, remembering at all times the kind of basketball they were sent into the game to play, managed to show enough skill to earn them a 26 to 23 victory over the University of Mississippi quintet last night at the gymnasium. It was the first win after five straight defeats for the University of Kentucky team.
Mississippi was well coached and kept up a driving and relentless attack from the sidelines. The visitors would have been the winners had it not been for the great individual work of Burgess Carey, tricky Wildcat backguard, who not once was drawn out of position by two men coming at him from opposite sides of the court.
It was Carey who started the Wildcat formations on their way and it was his rapid-fire line of chatter that kept the Blue and White basketeers hustling around.
At times the Wildcat passing was a revelation, the Blue players taking the ball down the floor and through the Mississippi defense until the visiting guards were dizzy trying to follow the ball as it was shot through them. Poor shooting under the goal, however, kept the Kentucky total from being larger.
Part of First Team Saved
Coach Applegran did not keep his first team in the game at all times as he was anxious to save them for the game tonight with Georgetown College in the gymnasium. Milward and Carey were the only regulars to play the entire game, but the elongated center did not play a floor game, while Carey appears to thrive on work.
Mississippi had a good pair of guards in Cutrer and Izard. Johnson is their leading floor player and he is a shifty man, but he was decidedly off in his shooting, missing several easy throws.
The Wildcats are not experts at the criss-cross, but know what to do when they get to the first line of defense and this is what made their play look much better last night. They used four-man defense with Milward playing loose under the enemy basket, read to shoot a crip if left unguarded or to come back up the floor on the long and short pass. The four-man defense worked well with Carey playing such a great game.
Kentucky started early and was leading 13 to 3, when Applegran made a couple of substitutions. Mississippi went into high speed and ran its score up to 12 points. The first half with the score 13 to 12 in favor of the Wildcats.
Hold Lead for Short Time
After a Kentucky goal in the second period, the visitors counted twice to go into the lead for the only time during the game. The 'Cats scored two field goals and a foul, Mississippi tallied with a floor marker, then the Blues hooped two more from the field. Mississippi ran the score up to 23, giving Kentucky only a point lead, but Underwood tallied a beautiful shot from midfloor just before the game ended.
The Wildcats will be forced to set a hot pace against the Tigers tonight as Georgetown is reported to have a strong team. Advices from Scott county say that the Tigers have a greatly improved defense because of a change in the lineup. They are handicapped, however, by an injury to Daniel and he is not expected to be able to play the entire game because of an injured ankle.
The Tigers are expected to line up as follows for the game tonight, which starts at 8 o'clock: Daniel and Bradbury, forwards; Forwood, center; Long and Hackman, guards.
