Obituary - Military Funeral Monday for Lieut. Karle H. Rohs, Cynthiana Democrat (June 4, 1942)
A most impressive service with a military background market the last rites Monday for First Lieutenant Karle H. Rohs, who was taken by death Thursday in his quarters at Ft. Knox, Ky. The entire population of Cynthiana was deeply shocked last Thursday when the news reached here that Lieut. Rohs was desperately ill and when the word arrived later that he had pass on, a pall engulfed the populace unlike any that had ever before existed, a terrific shock that one was not prepared to receive. While it was known that he had been in the post hospital recently, and had not been feeling well, the notice of his death found the people of Cynthiana wholly unprepared to receive the sad news.
The body was removed to Cynthiana and prepared for burial. At the residence on East Pike street hundreds of friends gathered to pay their last respects and the massive banks of flowers about the house bore evidence of the high regard in which Lieut. Rohs was held by his friends.
Funeral services were held at St. Edward's church at 10 o'clock Monday morning with Rev. Eugene A. Davis, uncle of the decreased, of Cincinnati, in charge, assisted by Rev. W.B. Curry, Cynthiana, Rev. William Franner and Rev. Francis Franer of Cincinnati. Burial in the family lot in St. Edward's cemetery.
Pall bearers were officers from Ft. Knox and included Major Silvers, Major Riddell, Capt. Robt. Durham, Capt. Arthur Atchison, Capt. F.F. Hartzig Jr., Capt. Paul M. Heverly, Lieut. Melbourne Mills and Lieut. Doxsie. A guard of honor including non-commissioned officers and enlisted men were also here from Ft. Knox.
Honorary pall bearers were James Patterson, John P. Lair, Dr. Henry Rohs, Jerome Wagner, Paul Clifford, H.D. Bastin, Lansing Nichols, Leon A.M. Wiglesworth, S.F. Shawhan, Carroll Shawhan, John Gartner, Norbert Pointner, John S. Linehan, John L. Cummins, John F. McDaniel Jr., W.C. Howk, McShane Shropshire, Wendell Cason, Mac Swinford, Edward Cason, Horace Poulter, Dr. K.W. Brumback, William E. Boswell, Dr. Paul B. Lail, R.H. Poindexter, French Patterson and Dr. H.Tod Smiser.
Lieutenant Rohs had been a reserve officer in the Army since his graduation at the University of Kentucky and he had kept in training each summer by attending camp. He was called into active service on February 16, this year, and had since been stationed at Ft. Knox, making week end visits here. After reporting for army duty he had charge of the giant post exchange, later being transferred to the managership of the fort's six moving picture shows. His experience here in Cynthiana especially fitted him for this particular type of service, and so well did he discharge his duties that his ability was most highly regarded by his superior officers.
For several years Karle Rohs had been one of Cynthiana's most prominent and popular business men. Besides being connected with his father in the jewelry business he was manager of the Rohs Theatre and the New Rohs Opera House and made many trips to the Rohs farm in Bourbon county which was purchased more than a year ago. In order to make it more convenient and save many miles in travel Mr. and Mrs. Rohs had leased a house in Elizabethtown and were planning on moving there some preparations already having been made when he was suddenly taken by death. Lieut. Rohs' wife and his father went to Elizabethtown Wednesday and had visited him on that day.
Karle Hermann Rohs was born in Cynthiana October 26, 1902, the son of Hermann A. and Julia Karle Rohs. He graduated from Cynthiana high school in 1921, from the University of Kentucky in 1925 and later attended Harvard. At the University of Kentucky he was an outstanding student being a member of the Alpha Tau Omega national social fraternity; the Keys and Lamp and Cross honorary fraternities, Scabbard and Blade military fraternity. Delta Sigma Pi honorary economics fraternity. The Strollers, dramatic organization: Phi Beta Kappa, national scholastic fraternity. He was a member of the University football squad and was Cadet Lieutenant in the Reserve Officers Training Corps. Lieut. Rohs had served here as director of the Cynthiana Business Men's Club, was a member of the Rotary Club, the Elks' Lodge and St. Edward's Catholic church.
On April 25, 1934, he married Miss Gertrude Hummel, daughter of Joseph Hummel Jr., wealthy Cincinnati manufacturer and the late Mrs. Hummel. Also surviving in addition to his wife, and three very attractive children, Joseph Hermann, Julia and Jeanne Rohs, are his parents.
