R.L. Sullivan Employment Officer Dies
Raymond L. (Coach) Sullivan, 67, employment service division director at the Mississippi Employment Security Commission and a former athletic director at the University of Mississippi, died Wednesday.
A resident of 1519 Ivy St., Sullivan had suffered two heart attacks this year but each time it was thought that he had recovered.
He died at his desk in the offices of the commission as the result of another attack. He was pronounced dead by the time he reached St. Dominic's Hospital in an ambulance.
Sullivan was University of Mississippi Athletic director from 1919 to 1930 and then served two years as registrar. While a resident of Oxford, he served for four years as state senator.
He had also served as supervisor of physical education for Muskogee, Okla., public schools and was coach at Memphis, Tenn. high school for five years.
Sullivan was born a Holden Mo., educated at Warrensburg, Mo., State Teachers College, the Battle Creek Mich., Normal School of Physical Education, University of Wisconsin, and the University of Mississippi, where he studied law.
He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, board of directors of the Jackson Country Club, a Presbyterian, a Mason, Knight-Pythias, and an Elk.
Survivors includes Mrs. Sullivan, two brothers, Charles of Warrensburg, Mo., and Lyle of Naperville, Ill., and a siser, Mrs. Mildred Thompson, Barrie, Ontario, Canada.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Wright and Ferguson chapel, with the Rev. John Reed Miller, of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Lakewood Cemetery.
