Y.M.C.A. BEATS STATE TWO BASKETS
Game at University Friday Night One of Closest Ever Seen in Lexington and Was Ful of Excitement
The husky Y.M.C.A. basketeers put a crimp in the Wildcats' record for this season by defeating the State University five 27 to 25 in the initial contest Friday night in the Armory. From the first whistle to the final blast it was a fight, and the earnestness of the players on both teams, combined with their splendid playing, kept the crowd on the anxious seat. Considering that this was the first contest of the season the Wildcats showed in good form and it was only the clean goal shooting in the last few minutes of the play that gave the Y.M.C.A. the verdict. State got away with a two-point lead when Farmer tossed the ball for a goal at the beginning. Then things were kept interesting the remainder of the game and at no time was there a difference of over four or five points in the score. The first half ended with State two points in the lead, 12 to 14.
The second period was replete with exciting situations and good playing. State maintained the lead until near the end of the half when the visitors ran up the score to 25, tying the Wildcats. With the count even and only a few minutes to play, Kimbrough cinched the Y.M.C.A. victory by a field goal just before the final blast of the whistle. In the second half Barnett (captain) sustained a sprained ankle and retired in favor of Morgan. This was Morgan's first appearance on the Varsity squad and his splendid work last night promises to make the berths of some of the other Wildcats a little uncertain. Morgan threw two field goals while in the game. Farmer showed up in mid-season form, secured three goals and threw eight fouls out of twelve attempts. Captain Barnett and Preston were in the game at all times.
For the Y.M.C.A. Guyn and Kimbrough were the stars. The whole Y.M.C.A. squad put up a good game. State was awarded 1 point and Y.M.C.A. 4 points for pushing.
