Obituary - Metropolitan Basketball Writer's Association (May 11, 2019)
CALABASH, N.C. - Christopher Thomas "Mickey" Crowley, 85, a hard-working and well-respected basketball official and a member of six Halls of Fame, passed away on Sunday, May 5, at his home in Calabash, a town just north of Myrtle Beach, S.C.
A native of Queens, NY, born April 22, 1934, Crowley officiated college games for nearly 30 years and was presented with a Distinguished Service Award by the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association in 2003.
One of the busiest referees in the college ranks known for his self-deprecating humor in addition to his fairness and dedication to getting the call correct, Crowley worked more than 1,000 games from 1963 to 1991 - he was a regular fixture at Madison Square Garden - then transitioned to a supervisor of officials. Among the conferences whose games he refereed were the Big East, Atlantic 10, Metro Atlantic, Ivy, Patriot, Sun Belt, Southeast and Atlantic Coast. He officiated the NIT Finals 10 times, worked 19 consecutive NCAA Tournaments and whistled two Final Fours. His last game on the court was the NCAA Championship in 1991 in which Duke defeated Kansas 72-65.
College officiating, however, was in a sense just a part-time job for Crowley. His weekday job was as an administrator in Nassau County, NY, assigning officials for various high school, college and junior college sports events.
The son of the late Christopher and Ann Hammel Crowley, Mickey Crowley was a veteran of the U.S. Army and an avid golfer who regularly practiced his passion on a near daily basis after his retirement and relocation to the Carolinas. He wrote a book, Throw the Ball High, co-authored with former Met area sportswriter and editor Ralph Wimbish, that was published in 2017.
Crowley is survived by his wife of 62 years, Pat; five children: Tim (and Lorraine) of Philadelphia, PA; Theresa Crowley (and Janet Capuano) of Calabash; Kathie Ylannes (and Guy) of Calabash; Joanne Gryski (and Marty) of Herndon, VA; and Christine Sales (and John) of Holly Springs, NC; a sister, Hannah Weinstein, of Williston Park, NY; 11 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Funeral services and burial were to be held in Shallotte, NC, with arrangements handled by Brunswick Funeral Service.
