Obituary - Philadelphia Inquirer (April 11, 1998)
Hal Grossman, 78 Referee for Collegiate Basketball
by Andy Wallace
Hal Grossman, 78, of Annapolis, Md., a referee who officiated at major collegiate basketball games in the region for 20 years, died of a heart attack yesterday at his home in Annapolis, Md., where he had lived for the last six years.
For many years until he retired in 1980, Mr. Grossman was the physical education director at the Jewish Community Center in Allentown. He also was a busy referee.
"he worked holiday festivals, the NIT finals, NCAA regional tournaments, the ACC, the Big East, and the all major conference," said his daughter, Sandy Grossman.
Former Inquirer sports editor Frank Dolson lauded Mr. Grossman as "a very special person . . . a basketball referee who adds something to the game. Feeling, mostly. Genuine, heartfelt feeling for the young men who play it and the older men who coach it."
When he was coach of Villanova, Rollie Massimino called Mr. Grossman "one of the best officials in the United States. I love his style because he makes players relax. . . . He has a genuine love for the players."
Born in the Bronx, N.Y., Mr. Grossman was in the Army during World War II, then earned a bachelor's degree in education at West Virginia University. After college, he signed a professional baseball contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates (he was a shortstop), but he soon returned to school, earning a master's degree at Columbia University.
He was the physical education director of the Jewish Community Center in Rochester, N.Y., for a short time before taking the same job in Allentown.
He was elected to the Big Five and the Lehigh Valley Halls of Fame.
In addition to his daughter, he is survived by his wife, Gloria Gottlieb Grossman, and two grandchildren.
Services will be held at noon Monday at Hardesty Funeral Home, 12 Ridgely Ave., Annapolis, Md.
