Ferry, With 23 Points, Leads Duke to Easy Victory in Tipoff

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Nov. 19 -- Duke confirmed its high hopes for the college basketball season and Kentucky realized its worst fears today as the Blue Devils routed the Wildcats, 80-55, in the Tipoff Classic.

A week before the game, Coach Mike Krzyzewski of Duke said his greatest fear was having his highly rated Blue Devils outplayed by an underdog Kentucky team.

The Wildcats had lost two star backcourt players, one to graduation and an underclassman to the National Basketball Association. A key freshman recruit quit school after a series of off court problems, and another key player was declared academically ineligible before the season began.

"I look for them to band together and rally as a group," Krzyzewski predicted. "I just hope that we're ready."

Kentucky rallied this afternoon and Duke was ready, turning back each challenge before 8,908 fans at the Springfield Civic Center.

Ferry Scores 23

Danny Ferry, the Blue Devils' 6-foot-10-inch forward, scored a game-high 23 points and sparked a 16-0 second-half run with 8 points, 6 on 3-point shots. Ferry's efforts came after Kentucky completed the last of its grueling uphill climbs with LeRon Ellis, its 6-10 sophomore, tying the score at 43-43 with 16 minutes 43 seconds left in the game.

Ellis picked up his fourth foul 5 seconds later and left the game. That's when Duke closed the door.

Quin Snyder began the deluge with a 3-pointer, and after Kentucky committed one of its 14 second-half turnovers, Ferry nailed a 3-pointer that made it 49-43.

After Kentucky missed a shot, Ferry pulled up on the wing and nailed a jump shot to make it 51-43. He made it 54-43 with a 3-pointer after another Kentucky turnover.

Kentucky had 29 turnovers for the game.

"Danny was terrific," Krzyzewski said afterward. "He took what was there."

Ferry said that he was simply happy to be playing. He suffered a knee injury this summer that forced him to miss the Olympics.

"It felt great playing today" he said. "It was just exciting to be playing again. I was a little nervous, but I guess it's normal for the first game."

Ferry shot just 47 percent, 9 of 19, but was deadly when the Blue Devils needed him. Phil Henderson scored 13 points, Snyder and Robert Brickey scored 10 each, and five players scored off the bench.

"They have a deep bench," said Ellis. "They have an incredibly deep bench."

Coach Facing Rumors

Ellis scored 17 pints before fouling out with 9:11 left in the game. Coach Eddie Sutton, Kentucky's embattled head coach, praised his team for coming back and pulling together under difficult circumstances.

"I'm proud of our first-half defense and I think we hung in there," Sutton said. "By the time we get to the league, we'll be pretty good.

But with new rumors circulating nearly every day, it's uncertain whether Sutton will be around that long.

A National Collegiate Athletic Association investigation continues. In addition to looking into charges that Eric Manuel, Kentucky's sophomore forward, obtained his eligibility fraudulently, the N.C.A.A. is investigating allegations that Chris Mills, the freshman forward, received a cash payment from a Kentucky assistant coach. Last week Cliff Hagan, the school's athletic director, resigned.

After the game, Sutton said that the last month has been difficult. In fact, he said, facing Duke has been the easiest part of the ordeal.

"I've gone through every emotion known to man," he said. "I have been disappointed in people who have prejudged without giving us our day in court. Some have helped formulate public opinion against our team."

"Life's not been easy for any of us," he added. "We'll go on, one day at a time and hopefully we'll all grow as people."*
