Daniels nets career high in win over Ole Miss
Erik Daniels set a career-high with 24 points, but it was the long-awaited emergence of Antwain Barbour that stole the show as Kentucky fended off Ole Miss 71-61 at Rupp Arena.
Barbour scored 12 points by hitting four of his five three-point attempts to finally come to life for the Cats. After struggling most of the season, the senior who had hit 1 of-13 from long range coming into the game caught fire.
"I was glad to see Antwain have a very good game," UK coach Tubby Smith said. "He made his threes and open shots. That's a big positive for us and him."
The Cats (14-2, 4-1 SEC) needed every bit of Barbour's production with Ole Miss packing the lane and taking Chuck Hayes and Gerald Fitch out of the game plan. That paved the way for Daniels and Barbour to beat the Rebels (10-7, 2-4).
"We talked about the game plan, taking Hayes and Fitch out of the game," Ole Miss coach Rod Barnes said. "We went into the game saying if Kelenna, Antwain or even Josh, one of those guys, make them beat us.
"You take your chances somewhere."
With Daniels netting his career-high over the smallish Rebels, Hayes was free to concentrate on Ole Miss leading scorer Justin Reed. Hayes held his own, giving up 15 points, but forcing Reed into a 6-of-20 shooting night and blocking at least three of Reed's shots in the first half.
The Cats still had to hold on in the second half, reeling off an 18-8 run after Ole Miss pulled within 53-50 with 5:27 remaining. UK shot 63.2 percent in the second half and made 14-of-17 from the free throw line to seal the game.
