Cats rip Alcorn State 94-63
Tubby Smith may not like Kentucky's non-conference gauntlet, but for the second time in three days, the Cats got a breather, routing Alcorn State 94-63 at Rupp Arena.
UK (8-3) began the game with a 16-4 spurt, then closed the half with a 10-3 run to lead 44-28 at intermission. The Cats continued their dominance in the second half, slowly building a lead that reached as much as 37 points before Smith called the dogs off.
"We did a better job pressuring the ball," Smith said. "We were really challenging every pass and getting up on the ball handlers, forcing them to do something. We had gotten away from that."
Chuck Hayes led the Cats in scoring with 15 points, while Erik Daniels continued his surprisingly stellar season with 14 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Even without leading scorer Keith Bogans having a good scoring night (five points), UK still rang up over 23 assists and forced 28 Alcorn State (2-10) turnovers.
Smith had railed on UK's defense leading up to game, especially after Tennessee State scored 87 points and shot nearly 50 percent. Although UK totally outmanned the Braves, UK's defensive effort was much improved, holding Alcorn to just 34.4 percent shooting.
In all, 14 Cats scored, as UK shot 52.3 percent from the field. Even walk-ons Preston LeMaster (five points) and Ravi Moss (six points) got into the act for UK, as the Cats bench scored 53 points and grabbed 21 rebounds.
UK has one more outing against Ohio this Saturday in Cincinnati before traveling to Knoxville to face Tennessee in its Southeastern Conference opener next Wednesday night.
Jules Camara (#40) is fouled by Alcorn State's Brian Jackson
