Cats clinch #1 seed
P>LEXINGTON, KY -- The Kentucky Wildcats officially clinched at least a share of their 41st SEC title, and also claimed the #1 seed for the upcoming SEC tourney the SEC East as they defeated the Auburn Tigers 90-78.The Cats used an 11-1 run late in the first half to turn a 21-21 tie into a 32-22 lead. The Wildcats never looked back, as they were up 43-31 at the half, and had leads as large as 25 points in the second half. over the Auburn Tigers, and never looked back. An 11-1 run by the Auburn starters against the Kentucky subs to end the game enabled the Tigers to make the final score closer than the game actually was.
Kentucky placed five players in double figures, including a trio of freshmen. Jason Parker recorded a career high 19 points. Gerald Fitch and Erik Daniels tossed in 11 points each. Tayshaun Prince and Keith Bogans scored 12 and 10 points respectively.
Kentucky hit 34-67 from the field, for 50.7%. The Cats hit only 5-22 attempts from behind the arc, and shot a woeful 17-30 from the free throw line.
Adam Harrington led Auburn in scoring with a game high 27 points. Harrington scored 14 of his points over the last seven minutes of play, after the Tigers went down by over 20 points. Jamison Brewer grabbed a game high 17 rebounds, from his point guard position, while also dropping four dimes.
Coach Tubby Smith vowed the Wildcats would defend much better, after their weekend loss at Arkansas. Smith's squad held Auburn to 3-23 from behind the arc, and to 38% for the game.
Senior Saul Smith, playing his final game in Rupp Arena, scored his only two points to begin Kentucky's Senior Night scoring. The Senior Night festivities will be shown on WKYT 27 at 11:00 PM tonight.
Tayshaun Prince also had an important day, as he celebrated his 21st birthday. Prince was in a giving mood, as he dished out a team high four assists, while also collecting a team high seven rebounds.
