Attack of the 3 Pt Monster:
After producing a record 15 game road winning streak in the SEC, 5th ranked Kentucky was demolished at Florida by a score of 75-68 (in a game not as close as the final score indicates). The game was televised by ESPN, with Brad Nessler and Dick Vitale as commentators.
Florida got the opening tip and Haslem made a layup for a 2-0 Gator lead. Evans answered with a long 2, then Bradley got a layup for a 4-2 UK edge. Shannon and Evans traded shots, but Haslem got a dunk to tie it at 6-6. DuPay made a high bank shot for an 8-6 UF edge at the initial TV timeout, which grew to 11-6 after a Parker 3. Magloire made a hook shot, but Stolt hit a 3 for a 14-8 UF margin. Hogan made a FT pair, then Prince put back his own miss to cut it to 14-12 Florida. But Miller had a putback basket for a 16-12 margin at the 2nd TV timeout. Magloire was guilty of offensive goaltending on a shot which was probably going to fall in. Turner cut it to 16-15 after an old-fashioned 3, but the Gators went back to 3 pt shooting. DuPay made a 3, then Miller made another, and it was 22-15 UF. Turner had a layup, then Evans had a FT pair, but Miller had another 3 for a 25-19 Florida edge. A Magloire putback basket was countered by Haslem FTs for a 27-21 score. Kentucky cut it to 27-6 after a Magloire dunk and Bradley layup, but Stolt hit a 3 to make it 30-26 Florida. Magloire and Turner made baskets to tie it at 30-30, but then Haslem made 2 FTs. Magloire made 1 of 2 FT attempts, then Haslem made a pair for a 34-31 Florida edge at the next TV timeout. Hogan put back a Padgett miss to cut it to 34-33, and Kentucky was finished with scoring in the half. Florida, on the other hand, got another Stolt 3, a Miller FT, a Miller FT pair, a Shannon FT, and a Haslem FT unanswered. Kentucky had the final shot of the half, but Hogan missed a 3, and Florida almost had a final shot of the half but they walked, to bring the 1st half to an end with a 42-33 Gator lead. UF was 7-12 from 3 pt range in the opening period, and Kentucky was 0-7. Senior Scott Padgett had 0 pts and 0 rebounds at intermission.
To start the 2nd half, after a Turner miss, Haslem got a lob pass inside for an easy dunk to make it 44-33 UK. Bradley had a layup, then Allison made a FT, but Miller had a layup and Wright banked in a 3 for a 49-36 margin. UK players looked tentative (Allison passed up 2 3 pt attempts in a single possession for the Cats). Turner drove for a layup, but then Wright made an old-fashioned 3 for a 52-38 margin. Smith's 13 footer was answered by a long Miller 2 (foot on the line). Magloire got a fingerroll shot, and it was 54-42 Florida at the next TV timeout. Prince scored on a 3-on-1 fast break, then Bradley made a nice move inside to cut the lead to single digits at 54-46. But Weaks hit a pair of FTs and Stolt made a 15 footer for a 58-46 edge. Evans hit a long 2 (foot on the line) and Turner made a layup on a 4-on-1 fast break, to close to 58-50. UK even cut it to 7 a minute later after an Evans layup, but could get no closer. Miller made another long 2, then Miller made a 4 pt play as he was fouled on a 3 by Evans from 'way outside. This made the score 65-52 Florida. Miller made a FT and Weaks had a layup as the shot clock expired for a 68-54 lead. Turner's FTs were answered by a pair of Wright FTs. Smith finally made a 3 (to keep alive UK's streak of consecutive games with at least 1 3 pointer, which now stands at 358 straight games). Shannon was fouled and made both FTs. Smith made a long 2 (foot on the line), then Shannon made another FT. At this pt, inside the final minute of the game, UK's seniors were 0-9 from 3 pt range. With Florida leading 73-61 and the game safely tucked away, Scott Padgett finally scored 2 FTs with 32 seconds left in the contest. He made a 3 with 21 seconds left to cut it to 73-66, but everyone in the building knew that UK would lose the game. Miller was fouled and made a FT pair, then Turner had a FG on a drive and was fouled. He missed the FT, and that was the end of the scoring, with Kentucky losing 75-68.
Florida had halted Kentucky's string of 15 consecutive SEC road game wins with the win. The last time Kentucky had lost an SEC road game was exactly 2 years earlier to the day, when they went down at South Carolina 84-79 in OT. After the win, freshman Ted Dupay jumped into the crowd and danced on press row, giving high fives to students. Eventually Florida Athletics Director Jeremy Foley told him to get off the press row table.
