Alabama's Tide Rises As Cats' Falls:
For the 1st time since 1994, 5th ranked Kentucky lost 2 consecutive SEC games as they fell to the Crimson Tide 62-58 in Tuscaloosa. [JNB note - I didn't get to see the game myself, as the local Atlanta affiliate made a last minute decision to broadcast another game.] This was the 1st win by Alabama over Kentucky in basketball in the last 8 years. Alabama's leading scorer, Brian Williams, was not in the game due to a foot injury.
After Doc Martin made a 3 to tie the score at 56-56 with a little over 2 minutes remaining, Padgett had a putback shot to complete the Kentucky scoring, at 58-56 Wildcats. UK was up 58-57 in the 2nd half when Magloire blocked a shot by Haginas. Smith saved the ball from going out of bounds, but Haginas got it, and raced unmolested to the basket for a dunk and the lead with 23.8 seconds left. With 18.9 seconds remaining, UK called a timeout. When play resumed, Wayne Turner tried to drive down the left side of the lane. But he lost the ball in a collision with center Jeremy Hays. TV announcer Bob Kesling said of the Turner-Hays collision, "Turner got hammered. They didn't call it." Jones grabbed the loose ball, who threw the ball to Haginas, who scored and was fouled by Smith. UK had 8.6 seconds left but could not score.
This was the 1st time this season that Kentucky had lost a game while leading at the half (they had been 16-0 in this category before the game). Alabama's Doc Martin's 20 pts was his career high in scoring at Alabama (he had scored 32 pts in all the previous games of the season). The 12 rebounds pulled down by Jeremy Hays were the most given up to a Wildcat opponent all season. UK was outrebounded 33-28, for only the 3rd time this season. Kentucky's 20 turnovers matched its season high.
