Win #300, Pt #1000:
Kentucky won its 300th game in Rupp Arena, as the #6 rated Wildcats pummeled LSU 82-62. The game was telecast by Jefferson Pilot (Tom Hammonds was the play-by-play man). Wayne Turner's 1st basket in this contest entered him as the 46th member of UK's "1000 Pt Club."
The game was joined by JP at the 15:53 mark, following the end of the Auburn-Georgia contest, with the Cats leading 11-7. It was just in the nick of time- Turner hit a 15 footer for his 1000th career pt as a Kentucky Wildcat, for a 13-7 scoring margin. Mance made 2 FTs, and Bridgewater made a shot underneath in traffic to cut it to 13-11. But UK scored the next 6, on a long hook by Magloire, a Prince 3,and a single Magloire FT. Mance drove on Magloire for a layup, then Magloire made a pair of FTs and it was 21-13 at the TV timeout (according to LHL writer Jerry Tipton, this is when Allison 1st threw up, an unfortunate effect from his stomach virus). J Smith and Allison traded shots, then J Smith made a nice spin which was answered by an Allison open 3 for a 26-17 UK margin. Evans hit Allison with a nice assist on a layup, and then Swift got a dunk to cut it to 28-19. But Evans made a pretty runner, and Camara made an 8 footer, for a comfortable 32-19 Wildcat lead. Carter made a 3 next, and Magloire hit a single FT. Carter scored on a drive, then Camara shot and hit a very flat 3. Bridgewater got an assist from Carter, and Hogan made a 3 for a 41-26 margin. Carter lost the ball on a drive, but he put back his own miss. Then Camara made another 8 footer for a 43-28 score at the next TV timeout. During the timeout, former Wildcat superstar Derek Anderson made the Y in the Kentucky cheer. LSU made a bit of a run, outscoring the Cats 7-2 over the next few minutes. However,Padgett made a fall away 10 footer, and Evans blew past the defense for a dunk, and it was 49-35 at the break.
LSU had a strong 10-1 run to begin the 2nd half and narrow the margin to 50-45 (Bradley's single FT was overwhelmed by a lob basket by Beshara, a long open 3 by Williams, a Williams layup, and an old-fashioned 3 pt play by Mance). Finally Turner hit a 15 footer, then added a long 2, for a 54-45 margin. But Carter hit an open 3, Saul Smith nailed 2 FTs, and Camara hit Bradley for a layup and a 58-48 score. Kentucky then scored 11 in a row before the Tigers could get on the board again (thanks to an Allison 3, a Bradley layup, a Magloire dunk, and an Evans 15 footer). Beshara had a putback basket on a 3-on-2 fast break, but Hogan answered with some FTs. Padgett almost took a shot, but instead he passed to an open Turner under the basket for a FG. Then Turner hit Evans for a layup and it was 75-50 at the next TV timeout. After several turnovers and misses, Swift finally connected on a 16 footer, but Evans got a layup to make it 77-52 Kentucky. Evans lobbed the ball in to Padgett for a layup, then J Smith made 1 FT for a 79-53 score. Evans got an assist to Padgett, then Beshara made a FG and was fouled. J Smith tapped in the missed rebound for a 4 pt play, and it was 81-57. Masiello was inserted into the game at this pt, and missed a 3, but Blevins connected on a long 3 and it was 84-57. LeDoux made an 8 footer, and Camara put back his own miss. Finally Mance made a meaningless 3 at the buzzer to make the final margin 86-62 Kentucky.
Wayne Turner now has 1012 career pts at Kentucky. Jamaal Magloire had his 2nd double double of the season, in pts and rebounds. Desmond Allison's 11 pts matches his career high in scoring at UK.
