Coaches Can Change Rules Or Teach Team to Play According to Them, Commissioner Says
DAYTON, O - Coaches can change the rules or teach their basketball teams to play according to the rules, Commissioner David Reese of the Mid-American conference said today in commenting on complaints of Kentucky Coach Adolph Rupp about officiating.Reese, who assigned Bob Colburn and Dale Rose to officiate a game said:
"If the coaches don't like the way the officials call fouls on the basketball court, they have their choice of two possibilities: either they can change the rules, or they can coach their teams to play according to the rules."
Colburn, who with Rose called 68 fouls during a Kentucky-Ohio University game Monday, said most of the fouls were "third stringers going all out to make themselves a reputation and who consequently were a little rough."
He added the "fouls were so obvious they had to be called."
Rupp, whose Kentucky cagers won 79-57, asserted that officials "blew enough wind through their whistles to fill a Zeppelin," and said the 41 fouls charged against his squad were the most in his 18 years of coaching.
He also charged excessive whistle blowing reduced the game to "a parade between free-throw lines," and said it "looks like a problem for the officials themselves."
Reese commented, however:
"The coaches are to blame because the rules are set up by coaches at intercollegiate meetings. They hand down their decisions to officials who either set up their own clinics for rule interpretations or have a school set them up where coaches interpret the rules."
"Complaining about the officiating isn't going to do them any good because the referees all work alike - they make their decisions as they see them," he added.
"I don't see what Rupp is screaming about, he didn't lose anybody on fouls," Colburn remarked.
Jim Line (#25) fights two Ohio Bobcats for the rebound while Wah Wah Jones (#27) and Alex Groza (#36) look on. (Note Line's jersey spelling of Kentucky.)
Kenny Rollins (#26) is back awaiting a charge by Ohio's #12. Alex Groza tries to keep up with the dribbler.
An Ohio player eludes Jim Line (#25) to shoot a circus shot. Alex Groza waits for the rebound.
