WILDCATS LOSE TO MIAMI TEAM, 36 TO 31
Deprived of the use of their star players, "Spooks" Milward and "Pisgah" Combs, for one-third of a game, the University of Kentucky Wildcats lost a 36 to 31 decision to the Big Red basketball team of Miami University, of Oxford, Ohio at the university gymnasium last night. Despite the fact that Kentucky was defeated, the game was a humdinger throughout and worth going out of your way 10 miles to see. Both teams alternated in the lead throughout, the score being tied three times in the first half and thrice in the final half.
The Wildcats did not lose to a vastly superior team by any means. It was the ineffectiveness of their substitutes which cost them victory, if the blame must be laid at anybody's door. We must confess that "Baldy" Gilb had a very, very bad night and June Lyons' exhibition at the center position when he replaced Milward was nothing to brag about.
Cats Show Big Improvement
On the whole, however, the Wildcats showed a 100 percent improvement over the Clemson game, which is a gentle hint that they will do better from here on out. The system which Mauer has been drilling into his boys blossomed forth last night and while Combs and Milward were in there to help execute it Kentucky's attack was mighty pretty. The Miami lads didn't know where the ball was half the time and they fell prey to several easy crip shots on the part of McBrayer, Combs and Owens.
Miami presented five boys who ranged around the "six foot three" on their stocking feet mark, and for the most part towered over Kentucky's team, despite the fact that the 'Cats are not so little themselves.
In Canfield, the Big Reds had a center which did everything that can be expected of a center. He got his share of the breaks in the center ring - yes, Milward did quite a bit better last night - and under the basket he was simply poison. He was about three inches taller than any man on the floor and when his team-mates missed a shot he would come along to do the job over. All in all, Canfield scored 12 points. Taylor, forward, wasn't left out in the rain when it came to scoring, ringing up seven field goals for a net total of 14 points.
Milward Forced Out of Game
Milward was removed from the game soon after the second half started and after Combs had scored a field goal from a pass from Lyons, making the score Miami, 26: Kentucky 25, with 11 minutes to play. He was taken out on account of four personal fouls. The Kentucky crowd saw little chance of a victory with these two men out and their fears were realized to the greatest extent. McBrayer tied the score at 27-all with a long shot from mid-floor a few minutes afterward, but Kentucky never got a chance at a crip from here on out, Gilb's long field goal and Owens' two foul shots ending the 'Cat scoring. Gilb's shot tied the score at 31 all again, but Taylor made two crips in rapid succession and Richardson threw in a free throw for good measure to make the score, 36 to 31, with 10 seconds to play. The Reds kept the ball in their possession for these 10 seconds.
Coach Mauer works on the idea that he doesn't have to have a back guard, but this idea did not work so well last night. The visitors went in time after time on the man-to-man defense to score crips or blow 'em.
Miami led the scoring procession, Leahy's free throw being the first of the night. Canfield made it 3 to 0, Milward's free throw was Kentucky's first score. Richardson scored another crip and Combs made it 5 to 2 with a free throw. Combs, on an out of bounds play, sucked in the Big Red defense and scored a crip, making the score 5 to 4. Taylor found Kentucky's basket unguarded and slipped in for another crip. Owens made a free throw good and the score was 7 to 5.
McBrayer Knots Count, 7-7
Owens passed to McBrayer a few moments later and Mac dropped in a basket to tie the score at 7 all. Milward sent Kentucky ahead with a neat shot from the side. Canfield's free throw made the score 9 to 8, but McBrayer's free throw and Combs' rapid fire baskets, the ball being passed by Milward each time, gave Kentucky a 14 to 8 lead. Taylor dropped in a goal from the side. Richardson went in for a crip and Taylor found Kentucky's goal unguarded again to score a basket which tied the score at 14-14. McBrayer dribbled in for a basket to send the Cats ahead again. Richardson and McGinnis completed free throws and Canfield tied the score again at 17 all. The same player gave Miami a 19 to 17 lead with a neat crip as the half ended.
Combs took a pass from McBrayer and flopped the ball in the basket to tie the score again as the second half started. Canfield sent his team ahead with a free throw and a field goal, 22 to 19, but Owens dribbled in for a shot which put Kentucky only one point behind. Canfield and Taylor gave Miami a 26 to 21 lead with two field goals, but McGinnis and Combs sank pretty crips to make the score 26 to 25. Richardson got a free throw and McBrayer tied the score again at 27-27.
Gilb Ties Score
Taylor's basket sent his team ahead again, 29 to 27. Owens made another free throw good, but Henderson went in for an easy crip t make it 31 to 28. Owens scored another free throw and Gilb knotted the count again at 31 to 31 with an unconscious shot from near mid-floor. Taylor scored two field goals and Richardson, a free throw to end the scoring. Final score 36 to 31.
The gymnasium was packed to the roofs for the game. The crowd did not agree with the decisions of the referee many times and voiced their opinions by cat calls and hisses. The sportsmanship of the student body could be improved, however if they would pay more attention to giving yells for the basketball team and allowing the referee to conduct the game in the way he sees fit, whether it be for or against Kentucky.
