Kentucky Defeated Mercer Easily
In the afternoon session of the tournament yesterday, the Kentucky team did what was expected and trimmed the Mercer boys by the safe margin of 49 to 25. The outcome of the battle was at no time in doubt, but Mercer did put up a very good scrap. The Colonels had Weekly's number and allowed him to score only two points. As Weekly is the mainstay of the team, it is not surprising that they were defeated. Whitehead got loose for 15 points and Gamble made four field goals which kept the Mercer team from getting walloped badly.
Adkins, King and Hayden did the heavy scoring for Kentucky again. The playing was not quite up to the form displayed on Friday, but the Kentucky coach says they can play lots smoother when pushed, so we will look for a fine exhibition from them on Monday and Tuesday.
The best scoring of the game was done by Gamble, of Mercer, who made four goals out of eleven attempts. Whitehead made four out of seventeen, and Weekly one out of eleven. The whole Mercer team scored nine goals out of forty-two trials. They also shot seven out of eleven free throws.
Kentucky made a total of nineteen out of seventy trials. Hayden got four out of twelve. King six out of twenty-five; and Adkins eight out of twenty-seven. They made eleven out of their nineteen free throws.
