William S. King, 79, 514 Lone Oak Drive, a retired claims clerk for Southern Railway, died in the St. Joseph Hospital Monday. A native of Burgin, Ky., son of the late Howard C. and Harriett Hicks King. He attended the University of Kentucky, was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and the ATO Fraternity.
He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Louise Dorsey, Lexington; several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Lexington Cemetery by Rev. Thomas C. Nix. Visitation will be 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. today at the W.R. Milward Mortuary - Southland.
Athlete Loses Leg, Kentucky Alumnus (Vol. 1, No. 9, 1938)
William. S. King, ex-student, 319 Clay, Lexington, a Wildcat basketball star in 1921 is recovering after the amputation of his right leg after having suffered from a blocked artery for over a month.
King scored the deciding point that won the first Southern Inter-Collegiate Athletic Association tournament for Kentucky in 1921.
In the final game of the tournament, Kentucky and Georgia were tied at 19-all when the regular playing time ended. However, a Kentucky player was fouled just before the gun was fired. King who was selected to try for the point made it good and Kentucky won the game.
