Captured by Central University Saturday Night in Basket Ball, When the Boys Defeated State College by the Decisive of 29 to 10. - Large Audience Witnessed the Spectacular Game
Saturday night before the largest crowd that has ever witnessed a basket ball game in Danville, State College went down to defeat before the doughty followers of the Cardinal and Blue. The game was the one on the result of which the championship depended. It was a battle between two teams who up to that time had tied for honors and it was in every sense the survival of the fittest. Long before the hour set for the contest a large crowd of enthusiastic devotees of the sport were restlessly awaiting the ring of the gong that would announce the presence of the two teams. Both ran out on the floor amid loud applause and after a few moments of preliminary practice girded themselves for a contest that each knew would be a fight to the finish. At first both teams were a little nervous and fumbled the ball continuously. Capt. Morris believed that his men were in better physical trim than the State boys and determined to stake all on that fact and instructed his men to play so fast and furious that State was down and out before the end of the second half. Central played the ball well and the first half ended with the score 13-6 and the State men pretty well tired out.
The same tactics were followed the next half and although State fought nobly to the end, Central's superior condition became very evident and her team work and goal throwing surpassed State's in every particular. This half ended with the final score 29-10.
The officials were Hinton, of Georgetown, referee, and Frank, of Lexington Y.M.C.A., umpire. There was no kicking upon their decision and the game was consequently very fast.
This gives Central the undisputed championship of the State and it is a remarkable tribute to the school that she should turn out a championship team in the third year that she has played the game. State was beaten two out of three games, likewise Georgetown, K.U. and Coliseum were defeated three out of three and Louisville Y.M.C.A. one by a score of 46-20. This includes all amateur teams which could have any right to claim first honors. Of course the Lexington Y.M.C.A. might claim the professional championship, but fortunately no such thing is known in the realm of basket ball. Central's total score for the season is 539 to her opponents 486. Seelbach was elected captain for next year and he is determined to turn out another championship team.
The lineup in Saturday's game was the same as usual except that in the latter part of the second half Glass took the place of Dosker who was hurt. Mason starred with five goals and Seelbach and Glass tied for second with three each. The halves were twenty minutes.
