Ex-Missionary, J.M. Wilson, Dies Louisville Courier-Journal (August 29, 1949)
The Rev. James Morrison Wilson, who spent 35 years in China as a missionary, died at 5:45 p.m. yesterday at his home, 2419 Glenmary. He was 64.
Mr. Wilson first went to China in 1912 as a mission teacher at Shanghai. He became superintendent of St. Luke's Hospital there in 1934 and served at that post until 1940, when he was ordained in the Episcopal Church.
He was interned by the Japanese in Shanghai in 1943 and spent a year behind barbed wire in an old tobacco warehouse used as a concentration camp. He returned home on the Swedish ship Girpsholm and for two years was temporary rector of the Church of the Advent here.
When he returned to China in 1946, he became head of another Episcopal hospital at Wushi, China.
Born in Bloomfield
Ill health and unstable political situation in China forced him to return to Louisville last January.
Mr. Wilson was born in Bloomfield, Ky., but spent most of his youth here. He attended Louisville public schools and was captain of the Louisville Male High School football team in 1903. He was graduated from the University of Kentucky and also played.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Martha Cecil Wilson; three daughters, Miss Nancy Ray Wilson, a missionary in the Philippine Islands; Miss Elizabeth Cecil Wilson, Chicago, and Miss Martha Stuart Wilson, Rockford, Ill.; a son, James M. Wilson, Jr., Washington D.C., and a sister, Mrs. F.M. Nelson, Louisville.
