Duke outlasts UK in overtime

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. --- Kentucky and Duke lived up to their "classic" pedigree once again.

The No. 8 Wildcats gave the top-ranked Blue Devils fits for most of Tuesday's Jimmy V Classic matchup at the Meadowlands, but when it was all said and done, the nation's top player delivered a monumental performance to keep Duke undefeated.

Junior guard Jason Williams hit seven of 11 treys and scored a career-high 38 points to lead Duke to a 95-92 overtime victory. He scored 25 of his points after Kentucky had taken a 61-52 advantage with 11:13 remaining in the game.

"I don't know what I was in. I was just playing basketball and I was just trying to win the game," Williams said. "I don't know if you want to call it the zone, the flow or whatever, I was just in the game and wanting to win."

His sensational effort helped the Blue Devils improve to 10-0 on the season, while the Cats dropped to 6-2 despite the valiant effort.

"We haven't been in a ballgame like that," Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said. "Kentucky was tremendous, but Jason basically just put us on his back tonight."

"We had no answer for Jason Williams," Kentucky coach Tubby Smith said. "We did a very poor job on him."

And it cost the Cats a shot at an eye-opening victory.

Kentucky led 43-40 at halftime and by as much as 12 midway through the second half, prompting Krzyzewski to bench all five of his starters --- including Williams --- to make a point.

"We just needed, like, E.R.," Krzyzewski said. "... Those (electroshock) pads on the chest."

Duke's reserves held their own during the three minutes they were on the floor, actually cutting the Cats' lead to nine when the starters came back at the 14-minute mark. Then it became Williams' game.

With the Devils trailing 61-51, he scored 11 points in a 14-4 run to tie the game with 5:22 left. After UK got a pair of free throws from Tayshaun Prince to reclaim the lead, Williams answered with a 3-pointer to give Duke its first advantage since the 31-30 in the first half.

Gerald Fitch's free throws gave Kentucky a 69-68 edge --- one of 16 lead changes in the game --- but back came Williams with another trey to put Duke ahead.

The teams jockeyed back and fourth down the stretch. Yet another Williams 3-pointer gave Duke a 77-75 lead with 1:22 left, but a Jules Camara free throw and Prince runner in the lane put UK up 78-77 with :17.6 seconds remaining.

With 8.8 seconds left, Prince was called for a controversial blocking foul against Williams. He hit the first of two free throws, but the second came off the rim and was rebounding by Camara. Kentucky had a last shot to win in regulation, but Prince was double-teamed trying to bring the ball up the floor, and Cliff Hawkins rushed a long 3-point attempt.

"The key was to wear them down, and we were right there, but championship teams reach down," Smith added. "We had a chance to make some plays. We just didn't get it done."

Duke struck first in overtime on a Dahntay Jones shot in the lane. The Devils extended the lead to 87-84 as Dunleavy scored seven straight points to offset four by Hawkins and two by Prince.

Hawkins, who scored nine of his career-high 15 points in overtime, then banked in a 3-pointer from the top of the key to tie the game for the 11th time on the night with 2:13 left.

After Williams hit one of two free throws, Hawkins scored on a drive into the lane to give the Cats their final lead at 89-88. A three-point play by Williams, an inside basket by Carlos Boozer and a putback by Jones helped the Devils hang on for the victory.

The loss overshadowed career-high games for Hawkins and freshman guard Rashaad Carruth, who came off the bench to score 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field. Gerald Fitch delivered 11 points and nine rebounds, while Jules Camara --- making his first start of the season --- responded with 10 points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots.

"Overall it was a great game," said Prince, who added 17 points and nine rebounds. "The only thing was we didn't put the game away."

It was a particularly disappointing night for Keith Bogans. The Cats' junior guard was 2-for-6 from the field and scored only eight points in 34 minutes of action.

Kentucky shot 45 percent from the field and held a 51-34 rebounding advantage.

"They took it right to us, their board work was phenomenal," Krzyzewski said. "They were absolutely relentless on the boards. It showed how well we had to play in the 14 minutes of regulation and in the overtime to win.

Duke shot 46 percent from the field, including 10 for 25 from 3-point range. In addition to Williams, the Devils got 21 points from Dunleavy and 15 from Boozer.
