Bogans, Cats Beat IU

The Kentucky Wildcats received an early Christmas present in Louisville on Friday night, shooting nearly 80% from the field in the second half, earning a desperately needed win over their arch-rivals, the Indiana Hoosiers, by the score of 88-74. Keith Bogans had a career night, scoring 26 points. Bogans combined with Tayshaun Prince and Marvin Stone to trigger a 15-2 spurt early in the second half to break open a tight game, which Indiana led by a single point at halftime. UK improved its record to 4-5.

IU's defense had been stingy, allowing their opponents to shoot just 40% in recent games. But Kentucky lit up the Hoosier defense for a blistering 68.9% from the field for the game, "We just wanted to come out and win this ball game," Keith Bogans said, "I wasn't getting good looks at first, but the coach told me to be patient and that's what I did. We played a lot quicker tonight. They had a lot of big guys out there and it was difficult for them to keep up with us."

"The patience of our players tonight was the big key," Coach Smith added, "I thought all the guys took good shots.Ê We only took forty-five shots.Ê We executed with basic fundamentals.Ê We didn't try to do too much.Ê They played an all-around good game."

Indiana played Kentucky primarily with man-to-man defense, "We haven't seen a lot of that this year," Tubby Smith said, "we're a pretty skilled team against the man-to-man."

Gerald Fitch started in place of Marvin Stone in Coach Smith's attempt to change the team chemistry and neutralize Indiana's hot outside shooting., "Gerald has played really well the past two games and has really played well in practice and deserves a little more playing time. Fitch played well again. He had 6 rebounds tonight, and was the second leading rebounder from the guard position. That's just fantastic."

So what was it like for Kentucky to play Indiana without Coach Bobby Knight on the bench? Coach Tubby Smith said. "Playing against Indiana without Bobby Knight will be a little unusual but it's still Kentucky against Indiana and it's still a strong rivalry. Both teams have struggled some this season but you can throw all that out the window when the teams hit the floor. This game is going to be important to both teams. Our guys have a sense of urgency. " Junior forward Tayshaun Prince added, "We have to play the whole 40 minutes. We have to get the ball down low and score or kick it to the open man."

Kentucky limped into Freedom Hall, sporting a dismal 3-5 record, knowing that it had to beat Indiana. Coach Smith knew what the team had to do, "We have to guard their perimeter people well and they are one of the best outside shooting teams in the country, if not the best shooting team, yet their big players are scoring well. We have to get the ball into the pain offensively and try to get their big people into foul trouble. The, of course, we have to hit our free throws. We have to exercise patience against Indiana. We have shot ourselves in the floor recently by taking too many quick shots, too many outside shots. We need to work the ball into our big men a lot more against Indiana."

Kentucky opened the game on fire, noticeably quicker with its Fitch-reinforced three-guard lineup. Fitch scored 4 points early as UK ran out to an 8-0 lead before Indiana scored its first bucket 3:15 into the game. But Indiana would come back behind baskets by Haston, Jeffries and Coverdale. Kentucky shot the basketball well (57% FG) but the Hoosiers forced 14 first half Wildcat turnovers. Both teams traded leads throughout the half, but it was Indiana that went into the locker room at the half with a 37-36 lead.

Behind the hot hands of Keith Bogans, Marvin Stone and Tayshaun Prince, Kentucky went on a 15-2 run early in the second half and the Wildcats found itself with its biggest lead at 55-45 with 14:17 remaining. For Indiana, Haston picked up his 3rd foul at the 16:21 mark. But Jared Jeffries would help keep the Hoosiers close with baskets from the inside and outside. At short hook by Prince extended Kentucky's lead to 12 at 65-53 with 8:40 remaining. Prince would finish with 20 points and a team-high 6 assists, hitting his first 7 shots of the game.

Haston reentered the ball game and nailed a bucket immediately. Newton picked up his 4th foul at the 7:43 mark with Kentucky still up by 10. Kirk Haston did his best to keep Indiana close but Keith Bogans was on target with a three point shot to give UK its biggest lead 70-57 at the 6:20 mark. Less than a minute later, Prince drove the paint and kicked out the ball to a wide-open Marquis Estill, who drained another three-pointer, extending the lead to 73-57. Haston picked up a cheap foul, his fourth, at the 5:17 mark and the Hoosiers looked beaten. Haston would pace Indiana with 18 points, 4 rebounds. Kentucky would end the game shooting 6-10 from three-point range, "Marquis came in and really gave us some solid play tonight," Tubby Smith said, "and Cliff played well when he finally settled down.Ê Our balance was outstanding."

Marvin Stone, normally a starter, came off the bench tonight and played extremely well. Stone, who has been considering a transfer, ended up with 13 points, 7 rebounds and 4 blocked shots, "He was really active around the basket tonight," Bogans said, "he is a really fantastic player. He was getting the job done." Coach Tubby Smith agreed, "Marvin played really well tonight, offensively and defensively." On the possibility of Marvin transferring, Tubby said, "He is dealing with some things right now and trying to work things out. That's all I can really say about that right now."

The Wildcats out-rebounded a large Hoosier front-line by ten, "That was very surprising," Coach Smith said, "they have a lot of big guys out there, so we did a really good job getting after them."

Kentucky's attempts to defend Indiana from the outside paid off in dividends.Ê The normally sizzling Hoosiers, shot just 25% from beyond three-point range.

For Kentucky, it was their 8th win in their last ten meetings with the Hoosiers. Kentucky returns to Rupp Arena on Wednesday to face High Point.
