Controlling the Commodores:
In a game televised by Fox SportSouth, 6th ranked Kentucky handled a determined but outmanned Vanderbilt team 73-57. The Fox broadcast saw numerous errors on screen in the scoring, and inane commentary by the announcers, including former Kentucky star Mike Pratt.
The Cats got off to a slow start, with their 1st pts not coming until nearly 4 minutes had gone by (it was only 2-2 at the initial TV timeout), and Vandy held an early 5-2 edge. But a Hogan 3, a Smith hi-arching 3, a Padgett 3, and another Hogan 3 gave the Wildcats a 14-5 lead and caused Vandy to call a quick timeout to stem the bleeding. LaPointe hit a 3, but when Allison answered with a 3 it was 17-8 (this was only Allison's 3rd 3 pt basket of the season). After this, Bradley hit a 16 footer, and later made 1 of 2 FTs to make it 20-10. Langhi and LeBlanc scored on quick 3s to cut the margin to 20-16, but Kentucky answered the challenge when Allison hit another 3. LeBlanc hit a 15 footer which was called a 3 by the Fox SS announcer (and was not corrected on the screen for some time). Another Smith 3 made it 28-18. At this point, Moore scored on a 16 footer (he was at least 2 feet inside the 3 pt arc, and landed well inside this line), yet was credited by Fox SS as making a 3, producing a 28-21 score at this pt. [JNB note - I was horribly confused all day regarding the true score, because of frequent gaffes on the part of the Fox SS announcers who called everything even remotely close to the 3 pt line a 3. Often the score shown on the televised scoreboard would reflect their call, and would not be changed for several minutes. Possibly the Fox SS announcers were simply correcting an earlier basket which had been a 3 but which they'd called a 2.] Since everyone else decided to shoot 3 pt shots, Camara thought he would get in on the deal, and hit only his 2nd try of the year (this was the 1st to go in) for a 31-21 score. Following a frantic flurry of misses by the Commodores, UK got the ball, but they managed the remaining time badly as they could not get off a final decent shot. The halftime score stood at 31-21 Kentucky.
Padgett started off the 2nd half with a 3, Evans drove to the basket surprisingly easily, and Turner hit on a long 2, to make it 38-21 Kentucky. Prater hit a on 12 footer for VU, then Magloire was assessed a foul on a bad call by the officials (he was pushed, but was himself called for a charge). The 3 pt shooting continued, with LaPointe making 1, then Magloire spun inside for a FG, then Prater hit a 3, then Prince did, then Prater again for a 43-32 Wildcat lead. Padgett was knocked hard to the floor by Howard, but former UK player Mike Pratt (1 of the Fox SS announcers) made the mindless comment that it was all acting on Padgett's part [JNB note - replays of the foul showed that Scott was hit pretty hard. I don't know where Pratt's mind was during this game, but it certainly wasn't on the activity on the floor. He seems to have forgotten all the basketball he once knew]. Bradley scored inside on a nice move, and Smith hit another 3 for a 48-32 margin at the next TV timeout. The Cat lead hovered between 12 and 15 pts over the next few possessions, growing to 58-39 after a Padgett 3. Hogan and Padgett combined on shots to make it 63-42 with only a few minutes remaining. Hogan nailed a pair of FTs, then Evans made Kentucky's 7th foul of the half, and Vandy shot its 1st FTs of the game. Howard made both to cut the margin to 65-50. With the final Kentucky reserves in the game UK cruised to a final 73-57 margin as Allison made 2 FTs and Williams scored inside.
Kentucky's 14 3 pt shots were a high for the team so far this season. UK also had a season high 93.8% FT shooting (15-16). Scott Padgett's 12 pts gives him a UK career total of 998 - 2 more and he will become the 45th member of Kentucky's 1000 Pt Club.
