Cats Cruise in Controlling Cantankerous Cardinals:
Kentucky had little trouble in subduing Louisville for the fourth straight year, defeating the Cards 78-70 in Rupp Arena. UK got off to a somewhat slow start, falling 6 points behind UofL in the early going, but they quickly caught up and held a 39-28 lead at the half.
Wildcat forwards Jared Prickett and Roderick Rhodes struggled (although Rhodes' passing was very good), but the team found spirited play from its guards Tony Delk and Travis Ford, as well as its centers Andre Riddick and Rodney Dent, each of whom had several nice blocks of Cardinal shots. UK built its lead up to 18 points late in the second half, but Louisville cut the margin to only 6 points before the Wildcats held on for their 8 point win. Delk's points and rebounds were career highs, and he was the only Wildcat who was consistently hitting his 3 pointers.
After the game, Coach Rick Pitino was quoted as saying: "I don't think we are No. 1. I think we showed a national TV audience that we are a hard-working, inexperienced team with a lot of potential, but I think Kansas deserves the No. 1 ranking...and they can have it. We're so far from No. 1, it's not funny."
