Cats Gouge a Gang of Golden Eagles:
The final was 115-77 Kentucky over Tennessee Tech, and it wasn't that close. UK did everything it wanted to in this game, and then some. Every Wildcat scored, and almost every one had a good game.
UK played horribly during its first two possessions. TT scored the game's first basket, and even had a brief 3 point lead at 5-2 early, but it went downhill from there. Rodney Dent was much taller than the regular TT centers (except for one substitute 7 footer), and he pretty much scored at will. Rodrick Rhodes had been told by Coach Pitino to slash and cut more often, and take fewer outside set shots, and he responded with one of his best games as a Wildcat, scoring 21 points and grabbing 7 rebounds. Prickett and Martinez were the only Cats who looked sub par, most likely because both experienced foul problems. Martinez got 3 fouls fairly quickly, and continued to play poor defense. His 5th foul was a horrendous call, though - he was quite set to take a charge, yet he was called for a block.
Jeff Sheppard was pressing too hard at the start (he once lost the ball, and on the next possession, in an effort to atone, he tried to drive to the basket but stepped on the baseline). Once he settled down, he hit a few shots and had a couple of assists.
Riddick has become an intimidator! On one play, he drove to the basket (a somewhat rare sight), and a TT player fell to the floor to avoid being run over. He went a perfect 6-6 from the floor, and missed only a few free throws. When McCarty entered the game in the first half, he got two quick blocks. Dent had *3* blocks on a single TT possession, but his 3rd was correctly called goaltending. UK tried relatively fewer 3 point shots in this contest, because they didn't need to - they could operate at will under the hoop.
UK led by 60-31 at the half, and shot a respectable 64% in the first half. Dent had 15 points by then, and 4 blocks. Riddick had 12 points. TT was led by Houston who had 10 points. It was more of the same in the second half - the lead was at one point 43. There were many highly spectacular saves, steals, blind assists, and other wondrous plays which were almost too numerous to mention. The game ended on a nice (and long) lob pass from Epps to Rhodes for a slam, and that's the way it ended, 115-77. UK's bench scored 47 points to TT's 12.
Rodrick Rhodes runs into traffic while guarded by Tennessee Tech's Carlos Floyd (#21) and Lorenzo Coleman
