Vanderbilt Whomps Cats:

[JNB note - I only heard about half this game (my radio reception was poor), so I can only give my feeble impressions plus what was in our Atlanta paper.]

UK started off moderately well, but Vanderbilt hung tough and soon gained a lead around midway through the first half. Kentucky's press sounded largely ineffective against the Commodores, and the Cats made numerous pointless fouls which really hurt them since Vandy was very good from the free-throw line (they only missed 7 out of 43!). Mashburn was held to 14 points and although UK connected on 14 3-point shots, it missed 20. UK only shot 41% for the game, which hurt, and many of its shots were fairly bad selections. Its height advantage was largely neutralized - neither Dent, Riddick, nor Mashburn were significant factors in this game. Ford played well offensively, hitting on 6 for 8 3 pointers (his only field goals), but he was in needless foul trouble all night and was not nearly as effective defensively.

Kentucky managed to come back for a brief lead in the second half, but otherwise it was all Vanderbilt, who played inspired basketball and whose home crowd was really rocking. The Commodores ended with a 27-11 run in the game's last 6 minutes, when UK turned ice-cold. Vandy had only 10 turnovers, with a mere 4 in the second half, which is an indication of their lack of problems with the UK press. McCaffrey's 14 assists was a Vandy school record. The loss allows Florida to slip ahead of Kentucky in the SEC Eastern Division, and puts UK in a tie with Vandy for 2nd/3rd.
