UK Beats the Vols:
Tennessee put on a surprisingly good showing against Kentucky last Saturday night as the Cats won 84-70. UT threw the ball away repeatedly on fast breaks over the top of the Kentucky press or when pressured by UK's guards, and had they avoided this sloppiness, the victory margin would have been much smaller for the Wildcats.
Alan Houston was sensational for Tennessee as he scored 31 points, but it wasn't enough as 3-point barrage continued on 13-23 shooting. Dale Brown started as cold as ice, but after a few minutes he turned on the afterburners and led UK with 23 points (his season high, and one point short of his career mark). Jamal Mashburn had another good game, scoring 21.
UK led for most of the game, although a cold spell allowed Tennessee to take a 3 point lead about midway in the first half, and the Vols kept it close early in the second half before falling (UK was 11-0 after this game, 2-0 in the SEC, Tennessee dropped to 6-5, 0-2 in the conference).
The record between the schools now stands in UK's favor by a 115-67 mark. UK has a 68-14 edge in games played in Lexington. Tennessee last won there in 1979 [JNB note - and I was there!] Rick Pitino is 5-2 against the Vols, Wade Houston is 2-5 against Kentucky.
Potential basketball signee Keith Booth was in the stands for the Tennessee game. National recruiting analyst Bob Gibbons still says, however, that Booth is signed, sealed, and ready to be delivered to Maryland. The football team hoped to have as many as 45 prospects in attendance at the UT game!
