Iowa Topples As Kentucky Clicks, 94-69
Firecracker Uproar Delays Game
LEXINGTON, KY. - Kentucky raced away from Iowa 94-69 Friday night in the Kentucky Invitational basketball tournament.
The game was delayed about five minutes when a firecracker thrown onto the floor exploded under the feet of the Hawks Andy Hankins.
Hankins is the only Negro player in the four-team tournament. There was no definite indication the firecracker was aimed at him, however.
Hankins was not injured. Police questioned several people in the stands but made no arrests.
A crowd of 11,700 saw Cotton Nash lead ninth-ranked Kentucky with 27 points while sophomore Jimmy Rogers popped in 23 for the Hawkeyes.
15-15 Deadlock
Iowa stayed close for 10 minutes, but after Kentucky broke a 15-15 deadlock with eight consecutive points the Hawkeyes never got back into contention.
Iowa pulled into a 10-6 lead, but Kentucky moved ahead, 15-12, after 7 minutes.
The Hawks made it 15-15 before Scotty Baesler hit two quick baskets, reserve John Adams added another, and Charlie Ishmael dropped in two free throws for a 23-15 Kentucky lead.
Iowa was never closer than six points after that and trailed, 41-31, at the half.
Iowa Shoots 37%
Kentucky hit 49 per cent in the second half and wound up with 46 per cent for the game to Iowa's 37 per cent. The Wildcats had a 51-30 bulge in rebounding.
Iowa's record dropped to 2-3. Kentucky is now 4-2.
