Kentucky, West Va. Get Scares, But Go Into Tourney Final

Lexington, Ky., Dec. 18 -- It'll be a rematch between two of the slugging heavyweights of basketball here Saturday -- smooth Kentucky and blitzing West Virginia.

Both, however, reeled on the ropes here Friday night before conquering stubborn opponents to advance to the final of the University of Kentucky Invitation Tournament.

Kentucky gained by defeating North Carolina 76-70 but had to overcome a late North Carolina flurry of punches to win.

West Virginia advanced before an estimated 11,500 by squeaking past a gallant St. Louis 87-86 in the first game when a missed free throw with a second remaining forestalled an overtime.

So, Saturday night, it'll be U.K. vs. West Virginia at approximately 9:30 C.D.T., for the championship in a rematch of a classic thriller between the teams last season. Kentucky won that one by 97-91.

In the consolation, it'll be St. Louis against North Carolina at 7:30.

Both Kentucky, ranked 13th in the last United Press poll of coaches, and No. 3-ranked West Virginia appeared ready to uncork knockout punches.

Weather Comebacks

But both had to weather comebacks by gritty opponents -- the Mountaineers, after a tournament-record 37 points by magnificent Jerry West, blowing an early second-half 20-point lead.

Led by guard Bennie Coffman and his 23 points, U.K.'s Wildcats jumped to a 16-point lead at 33-17 near the intermission, went into the half time ahead 33-21 and led by 12 at 43-31 after five minutes of the second half.

But North Carolina, led by Lee Shaffer and his 22 points -- 18 in the second half -- pulled up to 59-56 with 4:15 left before the Cats rolled again.
