Star Guard hits Winning Basket On Play Called by Rupp at Timeout

Lexington, Ky., Dec. 2 -- Vernon Hatton's five pressure points in the last frantic two minutes, gave Kentucky a harrowing 78-74 victory over Duke here Monday night.

The 6-3 senior guard drove in for a field goal on a play called by Coach Adolph Rupp during timeout to give the Wildcats a 75-74 lead with 1:53 left.

Then Hatton, a citadel of calm in the midst of frenzy, sank three of three critical free throws as a rattled Duke lost the ball twice by traveling and once had it stolen away.

And that, with a great assist by Adrian Smith in the five minutes before he fouled out, protected Kentucky's record of not having lost a season's opener as 12,000 nerve-shaken but vocal fans looked on.

Embattled most of the way by a tenacious Duke club, Kentucky blew a nine-point late first half lead and a seven-point margin with 5:38 left as the Blue Devils bedeviled the Cats right down to a heart-pumping finish.

The Demons took the lead at 74-73 with 2:20 remaining when 6-2 Bucky Allen pounced on an erratic batted-ball pass from Ed Beck. Allen - who contributed much to Duke's 85-84 upset of U.K. last season -- eagerly seized the ball near the Kentucky free throw circle, dribbled quickly past midfloor and, unmolested, drove in for an easy crip shot.

Hatton signaled for a timeout. In the huddle, Rupp later said when questioned, the Cats were instructed to pass to Hatton on a play in which the 6-3 Lexington senior guard and U.K. All-American candidate was to cut for the corner, then drive down the baseline for a crip.

And he did just that giving the Cats a 75-74 lead with 1:53 glowing in red on the electric scoreboard.

Duke raced down the floor, official George Conley of the Southeastern Conference whistled a foul against U.K. but official Leonard Toff of the Atlantic Coast Conference signaled he had called Duke for traveling before that foul.

U.K. couldn't get a shot off, was tied up, but Duke fired wildly and the Cats took over.

Hatton quickly was fouled with 48 seconds to go. He got one shot, since the foul was just Duke's sixth in the half (under new rules, the seventh foul in a half calls for a one-and-one shot). Calmly, Hatton sank the free shot. U.K. led 76-74.

Traveling Called

Downfloor sped Duke again. But again, now with 29 seconds left - it was guilty of traveling.

And again Hatton was fouled. Now he got the one and one, this was 21 seconds to go. He recorded his 25th and 26 points - high for the game - as unruffled, he sent through both shots.

It was a battle all the way. Kentucky had a chance to crack it open after it compiled a nine-point 41-32 lead with 1:40 left in the half.

Duke, however - led by Allen with 17 points, Bob Vernon with 16, Paul Schmidt with 15 and Jim Newcombe with 14 - kept after U.K. and trailed just 43-47 at the half.

Kentucky finally wound up by hitting 28 of 68 field goal attempts for a good 41.2 per cent shooting average but collected 45 rebounds. Duke, like Kentucky a veteran club and one you'll be hearing about, sank 27 of 70 field goal tries for a solid 38.6 per cent. It snared 32 rebounds.
