Kentucky Cagers Solve Puzzling Berea Defense to Triumph by 29 to 26
Lexington, Ky., Dec. 31 - The Mountaineers of Berea came down to Lexington tonight with a brand-new defense as startling as puzzling and as potent as Carr Creek's of two years back, and all but whipped the mighty Wildcats. Kentucky won the basketball game , 29 to 26, but even the water boy is still fidgeting from the shock of near defeat at the hands of what was figured to be 'easy pickins'."
Kentucky opened the scoring, but Berea began a long-range assault on the nets, and before the half closed was leading by 11 to 10. Spicer and Kleiser, with timely field goals, put Kentucky back in the lead shortly after the second period started, and again Berea's long shots came through to upset things.
With three minutes to go, Burton, a substitute, sank a looper to give Berea the lead, 25 to 24. Spicer rang the bell shortly afterward to reverse the leadership, and Milward followed with a crip to make the tally 28 to 25. Spicer then sank a free throw and Burton counted a point the same was as the game ended.
Spicer, who entered the contest as a substitute and found his way through the tricky defense, was by far the individual scoring ace of the night. With fifteen points, this young man led the van. Evans, center for Berea, was second with eleven.
The combat served as a primer for State's Southern Conference opener against Clemson Saturday night at Lexington.
