North Carolina Defeats Kentucky Quintet
Tarheels Take Early Lead Never to be Headed; Blue Plays Poorly Throughout
North Carolina's sharpshooting Tarheels thoroughly thrashed the University of Kentucky Wildcat's last night at the University gym, the score being 26 to 15, much to the astonishment of some 4,000 fans who were on hand for the game.
While a lot of credit must be given the Tarheels, who seemingly could hit a basketball goal dead center from almost any part of the floor, it was a Wildcat team that played as if it didn't know what a basketball was, that aided the visitors in their drive to victory. It just wasn't in them to play championship basketball last night. That's as good an alibi as any.
Sending the crowd to its feet with a goal by Combs on the opening tipoff, the 'Cats promptly set the fans down when they let Price tie things up, 2 all. Marpet then sank a looping shot from the sidelines, and from the moment the leather swished through the netting, it was North Carolina so and so, Kentucky less.
Gone, last night, were the memories of the sweet victory over Miami - gone were all semblance of basketball playing as the Cats were expected to play. When someone got in the open near the goal, his teammate chose to dribble in, and so on. Fumbles were far more frequent than goals, and long passes sailed out of bounds, sent on their way by a team coached to do short passing.
After that first minute flare up, when Combs sank a crip, the Wildcats did nothing calculated to delight their followers. In fact, that was the only field goal made by them in the first half, while the Tarheels collected seven. The score at the mid-way point was 14 to 4.
The second half failed to produce any decided improvement, although the 'Cats did collect three field goals, and thereby hangs the story of the 26 to 15 score.
Now as to the Tarheels - they were marksmen to the highest meaning of the work. They made 12 field goals, and 10 of them came from out beyond the foul line, it didn't seem to matter exactly where. It was just shoot, and another two points, please.
The North Carolinians played a man-to-man defense, and they played it with Carr Creek efficiency. Add this to the 'Cats failure to collect when excellent chances did appear, and be glad the score wasn't worse. Every player on the Tarheel five played heads-up basketball. Such playing has its rewards, and it didn't fail last night.
The game was the first conference game for the 'Cats and it foretold dire things, should they attempt to duplicate last night's performance in future conference scraps. In addition, it was their first loss of the year. Furthermore, it was just too bad.
