Obituary - Cincinnati Enquirer (September 16, 1989)
Paul D. Cain
by Terry Flynn
Paul D. "Chip" Cain loved his family, but he also had a deep love and devotion to his alma mater, Xavier University, where he was a standout athlete.
"His devotion to his family and to Xavier, in that order," said Mr. Cain's longtime friend, XU associate vice president Paul Lindsay.
Mr. Cain, 81, died Wednesday at Hospice of Cincinnati from cancer.
His son, Paul D. Cain Jr., agreed that his father was deeply involved with Xavier most of his life, "Sometimes my mother thought it was the other way around, with Xavier first," he said.
Mr. Cain, a 1929 XU graduate, played football, basketball, baseball and track for the Musketeers, winning 10 letters in four seasons. He played just two years of high school sports at old St. Xavier High School in downtown Cincinnati, but was named all-city and all-state in football. At XU he was captain of both the football and basketball teams his senior season.
He was later inducted into the Xavier Athletic Hall of Fame, as well as the St. Xavier High School and Buddy LaRosa Halls of Fame.
After graduation from XU, Mr. Cain coached at St. Ignatius High School in Chicago, and from 1931-1939 he coached at Purcell High School.
"Dad coached both the reserve and varsity teams by himself in football, basketball, baseball, track and swimming at Purcell," Paul Cain Jr. said. "Purcell won a total 17 Catholic League championships in those sports during the years he coached."
In 1939, Mr. Cain entered the insurance business and later founded his own company, which is now operated by his son. Following World War II, he served as chairman of the XU athletic board.
He was appointed chairman of the Cincinnati Boxing and Wrestling Commission and held that post when Cincinnatian Ezzard Charles won the world heavyweight title.
Other survivors are his wife, Rose Davis Cain; three daughters, Sheila Cain of Lakeland, Fla., Patti Cain and Kate Walker, both of Cincinnati; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
There will be no visitation. Services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Church, Hyde Park. Interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery Mausoleum. Memorials can be made o Hospice of Cincinnati, Xavier University Scholarship Fund or Bro. Mike Cain, S.M. Memorial Scholarship Fund at Purcell Marian High School.
