UK rips Chippewas
Kentucky is about to find out just how good it is and can be. With the warm up portion of the schedule completed it's time for the real challenge to begin.
The Cats flogged Central Michigan 84-52 in Rupp Arena in their last outing before traveling to hated rival Louisville on Sunday, the final non-conference tilt of the season. By the time they return home to face Vanderbilt in the Southeastern Conference opener on Jan. 10 UK should have a clear idea on where it stands.
Facing an outmanned Central Michigan squad without one of its best players the Cats looked sluggish at the outset for the second consecutive game. The Chippewas jumped to a 13-4 lead in the game's first six minutes mainly due to poor UK shooting.
It was the only sequence that went right for the Chippewas all evening.
In danger of letting Central Michigan gather too much steam Kentucky unleashed a suffocating defense to turn the tide. The Cats allowed just one field goal (in 18 attempts) over the final 11:02 of the half, and even that was a goaltending call against A.J. Stewart. After the Chippewas scored 13 points in the first five minutes of the game they managed just 10 the rest of the way, while UK ripped of 38.
Meanwhile, the Cats' offense got in gear thanks in large part to getting out in transition. Despite missing seven of their first eight field goals the Cats hit 12 of their next 14 during a 21-2 spurt that left the Chippewas reeling.
By the time Central Michigan actually put a field goal attempt through the net after 16:10 of game clock UK had upped its lead to 56-28. The Chippewas avoided shooting below 30 percent for the game when Jeremy Allen's dunk attempt rattled off the backboard and through as the final buzzer sounded.
Jodie Meeks again led UK in scoring, pouring in 23 points on the night. Patrick Patterson narrowly missed his ninth double double of the season but still dropped 15 points and nine rebounds while upping his field goal shooting to 32-of-40 in the past three games. Michael Porter also set a career-high with 12 points.
