With Bogans out, Estill powers UK past Wisconsin
Victoria Graff
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Kentucky lived the NCAA Tournament theme for a night, surviving a hostile crowd and an injury to leader Keith Bogans, yet still advancing to the Elite Eight with a 63-57 victory over Wisconsin at the HHH Metrodome.
The Cats (32-3) lost Bogans to a high ankle sprain with 3:25 left in the first half as he got tangled with Wisconsin's Kirk Penney near the lane. He came back into the game for less than a minute, then headed to the locker room early and did not play in the second half. His status is listed as questionable for the Cats' next game.
Luckily for UK, Marquis Estill had a monster game, dominating the interior to the tune of 28 points and six rebounds. The Badgers (24-8) stubbornly stuck with guarding Estill one-on-one and the Cats kept dumping the ball inside from all angles.
"We were making a conscious effort to get the ball inside," UK Coach Tubby Smith said. "When it worked, we wanted to take it to them even more."
Estill's previous career-high had been 22 points against Iowa in the 2001 NCAA Tournament. He also set career bests for field goals (12) and field goals attempted (18). Wisconsin Coach Bo Ryan said he was surprised Estill so clearly dominated.
"I was surprised he could initially catch that many (entry passes)," Ryan said. "He has long arms and he doesn't drift off (the block). When he spins and those arms go out, he's very difficult.
"We started to double him and tried to make him do different things. He might be listed at 6-foot-9, but when his arms go out, he's Kevin McHale."
Even with Estill's career game, UK had to fight for everything it got. The Cats fell behind 15-8 as Penney took advantage of a substitution that put Antwain Barbour on him. Penney drilled back-to-back threes as the Badgers ran off an 11-2 spurt.
UK fought back to take the lead at 24-23, then saw their leading scorer and emotional pulse go down in Bogans. Still, the Cats were able to muddle to a 32-28 halftime edge with sticky defense, holding the Badgers to just 37.5 percent shooting in the half.
The Cats led just 38-37 when Bogans emerged from the locker room at the 15:54 mark of the second half and shook his head to teammates asking if he was going to play. After Penney drilled another three off an inbounds play, UK trailed 40-38 and looked lost.
Penney would not score again.
"We needed someone to step up and contain Penney," Smith said. "Kirk was killing us. We asked who wanted to guard him and Chuck said, ÔI want to.'"
The switch changed the tempo of the game and UK immediately ripped off a 10-2 spurt to claim a 46-42 lead. The Cats, although challenged several times, never trailed again.
A Devin Harris three from the top of the key pulled Wisconsin to within 56-53 and two minutes later, center Mike Wilkinson drove past Estill for a bank shot that made it 56-55 with 1:34 remaining.
The Cats pounded the ball back into Estill, who missed a hook, but Erik Daniels made an acrobatic tip in to put UK up three with 1:04 left. After a Wilkinson walk, UK made its free throws down the stretch to hold on.
On this night, call it 'Survive and advance', which is just what UK did.
