UK tops UGA 85-70
ATHENS, Ga. --- If anyone was going to spoil Georgia's longest winning streak in 11 years and long-awaited return to the national polls, leave it to the Kentucky Wildcats.
Keith Bogans and Tayshaun Prince combined for 49 points and 21 rebounds as Kentucky rallied from a 10-point deficit and notched its 16th straight victory over the Bulldogs, 85-70, Wednesday at Stegeman Coliseum.
Kentucky (12-7, 5-2 Southeastern Conference) trailed 46-36 with 17 minutes remaining, but stormed back on the strength of its two stars, strong play off the bench and an aggressive 2-3 matchup zone that frustrated Georgia.
Bogans scored 17 of his game-high 26 points in the second half, and Prince tallied 12 of his 23 down the stretch as the Cats beat the Bulldogs (13-8, 6-2 SEC) for the second time this year. Bogans pulled down a career high 11 rebounds, while Prince added 10 rebounds, three blocked shots and three steals in one of the best performances of the junior forward's career.
"I thought Tayshaun and Keith carried the load and stepped up like we expect them to," Kentucky coach Tubby Smith said. "I really liked the way they played tonight."
The Cats managed only 29 points in the first half and experienced frequent turnovers, but turned in what Smith described as "one of the best halves we've put together" in the second. Hitting 22 of 32 shots (69 percent) from the field, Kentucky surged past the stunned Bulldogs.
"We just hit the wall," Georgia coach Jim Harrick said. "I was a little worried after the emotional game against Tennessee. We had no zip in those last 10 minutes."
"They got a good run going and we couldn't counter," Georgia's Adrian Jones said. "It all happened so quick I don't know what happened, to tell you the truth."
Reserve forward Marquis Estill and the aggressive zone proved to be keys. Estill was 7-for-11 from the field, including a pair of rim-rattling dunks, en route to a 16-point performance. The Cats' defense limited Georgia to only three baskets in the final 8:30 and to 38 percent (23 of 61) shooting for the game.
The Bulldogs' D.A. Layne (16 points) was held below his scoring average for the second time against the Cats, while dangerous post tandem Anthony Evans and Shon Coleman managed only 20.
"I thought the big key was inserting Erik Daniels in the game," Smith said of his 6-7 freshman forward. "He mad a big difference, gave us a big lift, and played with such poise... He gave us more size and helped us defensively.
"We felt like we really needed to extend defensively because of D.A. and Ezra Williams. We just extended it as far as we could and challenged them. We probably need to do more of that."
The victory places Kentucky a half game behind Georgia for the overall lead in the SEC. The Cats return to action Saturday in another key road game at South Carolina.
