Cats Eradicate an Entourage of Egregious Eagles:
After a really slow start, in which UK led by only 7 at the half, UK exploded with great offense and tough defense to mash Morehead State 97-61.
This was a tough week for the Wildcats due to final exams. Their practices were at 5 AM during the week, and Pitino promised them that if they played poorly against the Eagles, there would be a midnight practice after the game. Walter McCarty started his first game as a Wildcat, due to aggravation of an old back problem on the part of Jared Prickett (who nevertheless played a little in the contest).
The Cats were off to a particularly sluggish start, starting 0-3 on 3 pointers and being unable to pull away from a stubborn Morehead team. Travis Ford had a rare blocked shot in the opening minutes, but it was relatively even in the first half. Morehead even got a 2 point lead, but couldn't hold it. UK went up by as much as 4 points on a few occasions, only to see MSU cut it to 1 point.
Ford and the other UK guards made several poor passes on fast breaks or the half court game which resulted in a large number of turnovers. Jeff Brassow, when inserted into the lineup, provided an instant spark on offense and defense, and boosted the crowd. McCarty, although not scoring much, did a good job rebounding and setting screens, and his efforts drew appreciation from the crowd. UK built a lead towards the end of the half a 10 point lead, only to see it cut to 43-37 on a Morehead 3 pointer.
In the second half, UK starting with an 18-0 surge, sparked by several monstrous Riddick blocks. During this run, Anthony Epps made his first 3 point basket as a Wildcat. Tony Delk got into synch as well - all his points came in the second half. A Brassow 3 pointer finished the scoring for the night and gave UK its 97-61 victory.
Rodney Dent started off with UK's first 3 baskets, and he simply could not miss! He was unstoppable inside, and had a career high 24 points, on 12-12 shooting from the floor. His performance set a new Kentucky record, eclipsing Kenny Walker's 11-11 display against Western Kentucky in the NCAA tournament, and surpassing his previous personal record of 19 points in a game. Only Dent's fouling out prevented him from adding to his record. Another great effort in this game came from Andre Riddick, who blocked 9 shots.
