Former Tennessee coach Sines Dead at Age 62
PALMETTO - Former University of Tennessee basketball coach John Sines died here Sunday. He was 62.
Since, who had lived in Palmetto the past 15 years, suffered a light stroke in December and had been hospitalized the past several weeks with a brain tumor.
Sines was named Tennessee's coach in 1959 after serving as an assistant under Emmett Lowery for eight years. He resigned in 1962 after two players were involved in a gambling scandal. Ray Mears, who retired last month after 16 years as Tennessee's coach, succeeded him.
Sines then coached at Manatee Junior College in Bradenton, Fla. He resigned two years ago and at the time of his death was on Manatee's physical education faculty and coached its golf team.
Sines had a a wife and three sons. Services are set for Wednesday in Palmetto.
