Obituary - George Gumbert Claimed by Death; Services Monday, Richmond Daily Register (January 15, 1954)
Mr. Gumbert was in charge of visual education at Eastern and between 1920 and 1940 was professor of agriculture there. Before coming to Richmond, he was teacher and athletic coach at schools at Harian and Marion. He graduated at the University of Kentucky in 1917 and received his master's degree at that institution. While at the university he was active in the major sports. He belonged to Lamp and Cross and Alpha Zeta fraternity. A past exalted ruler of the Richmond Lodge of Elks, he was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
The deceased was a native of London, KY and was the son of the late Charles and Alma Gumbert. he served as an ensign in the Navy during World War I.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Maggie Huff Gumbert, a daughter, Miss Mary Jo Gumbert, Richmond; a son, Dr. George M. Gumbert, Jr., Washington D.C.; three sisters, Mrs. Selma Kennedy, Richmond, Mrs. J.T. Eads, Mt. Sterling, and Mrs. Mae Sollberger, Cincinnati, and two brothers, John and Robert Gumbert, both of Cincinnati.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Oldham, Roberts and Powell Funeral Home. Interment will be Richmond Cemetery. Active pallbearers will include A.H. Douglas, Harris Noland, David Williams, E.B. Neland, Jim Culton, J.W. Adams and Jimmy McCarty. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. W.F. O'Donnnell, Dr. Elmer Jaggers, Dr. T.C. Herndon, Dr. F.A. Engle, Dr. J. Dorland Coates, Dr. Smith Parks, Dr. John B. Floyd, Dr. W.J. Moore, M.E. Mattox and R.A. Edwards. The body is at the funeral home.
