Josh Hughes, Ex-Coach, Dies
Josh Hughes, for more than a quarter of a century one of the top high school football officials in Middle Tennessee, died yesterday.
Hughes, 73, the son of the late Mr. Edwin and Mrs. Amanda Ambrose Hughes, was born in Nashville and attended Hume Fogg High School. He began playing with the Ramblers, a well-known independent basketball team in Nashville, in 1915.
After a 10-year career with the Ramblers, Hughes concentrated on football officiating and became one of the best in the area. He retired from the game shortly after World War II. He also officiated basketball in the old Southern Conference and in the early days of the SEC.
The body is at the Finley, Dorris and Charlton Funeral Home. The procession will leave the home at 10 o'clock tomorrow morning for graveside services at the Spring Hill Cemetery. The services will be conducted by Rev. George G. Kuhnert of the Church of the Advent, Episcopal, in Nashville.
