LIBERTY TOWNSHIP - Carel A. Cosby Jr., a widely known sports figure in Southwestern Ohio, died Friday night in his township home.
Mr. Cosby, 66, suffered a heart attack Jan. 10 and underwent quintuple-bypass surgery Jan. 22 in Christ Hospital.
He was an educator for 45 years but probably was known more for his sports activities as a player, referee and observer.
He recently completed the 1996-97 season as an observer of officials for Conference U.S.A. games at the University of Cincinnati.
Upon his return to those duties after his recuperation, he was warmly greeted by UC men's basketball Coach Bob Huggins.
"He loved basketball, he loved our game, and he tried to make it better," Mr. Huggins said. "He had genuine concern for the people in it, and I always respected him for it."
Mr. Cosby was a college basketball referee for 40 years, serving in the Big Ten, Mid-American, Ohio Valley, Metro 7, Indiana, Hoosier-Buckeye, Ohio Athletic and Mid-Ohio conferences.
Between 1967-1981, he was a referee of NCAA Division II and III tournament games, calling championship games in 1976, 1979 and 1981. He also was assigned to area National Invitational Tournament games.
He was supervisor of officials in the MId-Ohio Conference from 1985-1987 and in the National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association from 1983-1987.
During 24 years as a baseball umpire, he worked in the Big Ten and Mid-American conferences. As a member of the Southwest Ohio Umpires Association, he served in a number of amateur leagues.
He was a 1977-82 player-coach for the professional Cincinnati Suds slow-pitch softball team, setting a league record in 1980 for pitching 10-1/3 scoreless innings in relief.
He pitched 30 years for Wilsman Truckers of Hamilton and Ohio Players of Dayton, with 1,033 wins and 252 defeats as a member of eight state championship teams. He pitched in nine world tournaments.
He also was a softball umpire for 20 years.
He was the first inductee in 1982 into the Butler County Slow-Pitch Hall of Fame and earned similar recognition in the Dayton and Ohio Slow-Pitch Halls of Fame. In 1989, he was named to the Ohio High School Athletic Association Officials Hall of Fame.
Mr. Cosby was past president of the Middletown Elementary Principals Association and the Middletown Area Safety Council.
He has been principal of Oneida Elementary School in Middletown since 9162. Susan Oldfield, an Oneida teacher 23 years, said Mr. Cosby "certainly loved the children. He spent day and night here and rarely missed an activity. He was very proud of Oneida students."
Prior to joining Oneida, he was a teacher, coach or administrator at Dixon High School in Preble County, Ohio, Mayfield Junior High School and Sherman Elementary School in Middletown and Monroe Elementary School.
"He was a great man," said Jess Wilson, principal of Babeck Elementary School in Trenton, whom Mr. Cosby hired from Oklahoma City in 1963 for his Sherman School staff.
"His first love was for children, and he had a special touch about him for children," Mr. Wilson said, "He had great support from parents and teachers."
He was a native of Hamilton, a 1948 graduate of Monroe High School and earned undergraduate and graduate degrees at Miami University in 1952 and 1953.
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie; four sons, Gary of Fairfield, Tim of Houston, Randy of Atlanta and Scott of Nashville, Tenn.; a daughter, Karen Fuchs of Fairfield; two stepchildren, Lisa Ivers of Fairfield and Scott Wycoff of Hamilton; his parent, Carel and Verlie Cosby of Liberty Township; five grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren.
