Walter Lyons Surface

Walter Lyons "Bud" Surface, 91, Seymour, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Seymour. He was a 1928 graduate of Greenwood High School, graduated from Franklin College in 1932 with a bachelor arts degree and received a master of science degree from Butler University in 1944. While at Franklin College, he was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and was president of Blue Key. He played football and basketball for four years, serving as captain on both teams in 1930 and 1931, and was an All-State selection in both football and basketball.
He was a teacher and coach at Paoli High School from 1932 to 1934. He taught and coached football, basketball and track at Shields High School, Seymour, from 1934 to 1943. He worked in vocational rehabilitation for the Indiana Department of Education from 1943 to 1944. He was a life insurance agent at Provident Mutual Life Insurance Co., beginning in 1944, and American United Life Insurance Co., beginning in 1975. On Jan. 1, 1960, he purchased the Joe Richart Insurance Agency.
Along with the Rev. Kenneth Murphy and Ernest Birge, Mr. Surface started a movement for the Boys Club in Seymour. He was a member of Seymour Rotary Club from 1934 to 1975 and served as president. He was president of the Chamber of Commerce in 1962 and 1972.
He was elected to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 1980 and received the Franklin College Athletic Achievement Award in 1982. He was awarded the Bronze Key Award from the Boys Club, received numerous Franklin College awards and received a Citizen Award from Seymour Chamber of Commerce in 1983.
Born Aug. 21, 1910, in Pleasant Township, Johnson County, he was a son of Albert Montgomery Surface and Edith Lyons Surface. On June 29, 1937, he married Bettye Hoadley, who preceded him in death.
Other survivors include a son, Stephen H. and Deanna Surface, Seymour; a daughter, Margaret "Peggy" and Steven Ackerman, Brownstown; seven grand-children, Steve Surface, Bloomington, Suzie Surface McDonald, Seymour, Scott Surface, Brownstown, Stuart Surface, Avon, Drew Ackerman and Stephanie Ackerman, both of California, and Tom Ackerman, Colorado; and a brother, George Surface, Greenwood.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Louise Surface Buell, and a brother, Fred Surface.
The Rev. Dr. Eugene Gladney and the Rev. Duane Aelick will conduct funeral services at 10 a.m. Monday at Voss and Sons Funeral Service, Voss Chapel, Seymour. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Seymour.
Friends may call from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. until time of service Monday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be given to the Boys and Girls Club of Seymour.
