Palo Alto High Coach Al Mercer Dies at 58
Alvin (Al) Mercer, retired head football coach and athletic director at Palo Alto High School, died of heart disease Monday in a Sunnyvale convalescent hospital after a two month illness. He was 58.
Mr. Mercer had lived in Sunnyvale at 1292 South Bernardo Ave.
He was a native of Los Animos, Colo.
Mr. Mercer joined Palo Alto High in 1959 and remained there until his retirement in 1975.
He was head football coach the high school from 1960 to 1962, during which time his team won the 1962 Southern Peninsula Athletic League championship. During the time he was athletic director, the school won six consecutive all-sports championships.
Mr. Mercer began his coaching career in 1935 at Boone High School in Boone, Colo. He coached in Utah and Colorado high schools, before becoming a coach at Westminster College in Salt Lake City, where he coached from 1955 to 1959.
Mr. Mercer also was an outstanding basketball and football official. He officiated at three national NCAA tournaments.
Surviving are his wife, Ruth Mercer, and a son, Jerry Mercer, both of Sunnyvale, and a daughter, Linda Parker, and two grandchildren, all of San Jose.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Sunnyvale Mortuary, West Fremont Ave. at Hollenbeck Ave., Sunnybvale.
The family prefers memorials be contributions to the Heart Fund.
