Prince Stings Tech
Kentucky withstood a late three point barrage by Georgia Tech to win 80-71 in Louisville's Freedom Hall. The Cats increased their record to 9-4 with the victory.
The pesky Yellow Jackets stayed very close to Kentucky much of the night, as first one team and then another went on mini-runs.
In the early going Tayshaun hinted that it would be a Prince of a night as he scored four of Kentucky's first six points.
With the game very tight, and the Cats up by a single point at 11-10, Kentucky went on a mini-run of 14-6 to forge a 25-16 lead. The teams traded scores on a Jason Collier baby hook for Tech, and a Marvin Stone feed for a Camara deuce, as Tech went to a zone defense. The zone defense sparked a Tech 10-0 run that saw them take the lead 28-27. A pair of Tech turnovers spurred a Kentucky 6-0 run that saw the Cats regain the lead at 33-31. That lead would in turn be short lived as Tech used a 5-0 possession to tie the game. That possession saw Tech's Clarence Moore hit a three point shot as Magloire fouled Tech's Alvin Jones on the inside. The play was not without controversy as ESPN's announce team of Brad Nessler and Dick Vitale opined that the whistle clearly came before the shot. To further add to the controversy replays showed that Jones elbowed Magloire in the face on the play. Tech scored on the resulting play and completed the five point trip.
Keith Bogans answered Tech's five point play with a jumpshot from the leftside to send the Cats up 36-33. This Kentucky lead too would be short lived as Tech's Shaun Fein drained a three to tie the game at 36. A two pointer by Collier set the half-time score at 38-36.
Collier quickly gave Tech a four point lead coming out of the lockerroom to give Tech their biggest and last lead at 40-36. A suddenly charged Kentucky squad went on a 9-0 to take a 45-40 lead, the Cats would not trail again. Spurred by a Magloire intentional foul Tech went on a 10-5 run to tie the game at 50.
The game was nip and tuck the rest of the way as it seemed everytime Kentucky went on a little run Tech would answer with a huge three point shot. Kentucky took a 58-54 lead, three pointer by Tony Akins; Kentucky took a 65-57 lead, Tech answered with a three from Fein; at 66-60 a another Akins three trimmed the lead to 66-63. With the Cats up 72-65 Jason Collier's three pulls Tech to within four, at 72-68. Following a pair of Magloire charity tosses Tech pulls one more three out of their hat to cut the Kentucky lead to 71-74. Tech would not score again. Tayshaun Prince hit two of four charity tosses and Desmond Allison nailed two as Tech scrambled to get back in the game. With Kentucky up by seven, and the game approaching the ten second mark, Kentucky's tandem of Bogans and Prince came up with the play of the game. A Kentucky steal and a Bogans pass to Tayshaun Prince for a crowd roaring flush punctuated the Wildcat victory.
Tayshaun Prince tallied his first collegiate double-double as he scored scored 21 points and snared 10 rebounds. The Compton Prince also added 4 assists, while not committing a turnover or a foul.
Jules Camara had what many hope is a breakout game as he became much more aggressive and scored 15 points and tallied 5 boards off the bench. Camara wowed the crowd when he made a sweet move from the top of the key, driving to the basket for a layup that displayed his athleticism.
Keith Bogans scored 14 points, and ripped down 8 boards, quite a feat for a guard who was rebounding against a Tech team that featured a 7-0 and a 6-11 player on the inside. Jamaal Magloire missed another double-double, but still managed to tally 12 points to go with 6 rebounds for the Cats.
Kentucky freshman Marvin Stone played a solid 22 minutes off the bench. Stone scored 6 points, dished out a pair of assists and gathering in three rebounds against what may be the biggest collegiate frontline he has seen to date.
The key for Kentucky was clearly what may be one of their best floor games of the year. Kentucky dropped 16 dimes, while committing only 7 turnovers for the game. Saul Smith tied Prince with team high honors with four assists, and equaled Tay's turnover free game.
Kentucky shot 41% for the game, but was aided by a respectable 38% (8-21) on three point field goals. Tech center Alvin Jones had three blocked shots and altered several other Kentucky shots to affect the Kentucky field goal accuracy close to the basket.
The Cats outrebounded Tech 49-34, including outrebounding the Jackets 17-9 on the offensive end.
Kentucky's next game is against Vanderbilt this Saturday. This will be the final trip to Rupp Arena for Vandy's star forward, and Kentucky native, Dan Langhi. Langhi's 31 points led Vandy to a 87-77 upset of #6 Florida in Vandy's Momorial Gym.
