When Irish Eyes Aren't Smiling:
Notre Dame took a 1-0 lead on a Garrity FT, but that was their only lead of the day as the Wildcats cruised to an easy 97-58 win against the Irish in South Bend. This was UK's 5th consecutive win against Notre Dame. The Wildcats were led in scoring by Walter McCarty, who managed 20 points for the game and 12 within the game's 1st 5 minutes.
McCarty hit on a 16 footer, a long 3, and a lob dunk off a Rhodes assist to add to Delk's easy layup on an inbounds play to put UK up 9-1, and the Cats never looked back. They went up 16-3 before ND got its act together (by scoring 6 straight points on FTs by Watkins and Justice, a Hoover dunk and a Justice drive) to close to 16-9. The Irish experienced numerous turnovers off such plays as missed lob dunks and careless passes. NBC commentators Don Criqui and Bill Walton weren't in top form either, once calling Jared Prickett "Priddick". The lead soon reached 30-17 for UK on shots by Sheppard, Prickett, and Delk. At this point, the refs (who must have felt obliged not to let the margin get too large) began calling bogus fouls on UK, particularly on clean blocks (UK got several, but was almost always called for a foul, even when there was no body contact).
Despite this, the Cats lead reached 40-24 and finally 45-29 at the half. Rhodes had not yet scored, and about the only problem for UK was a high number of turnover (occurring mostly after the huge UK lead was built). McCarty had 17 1st half points.
The second half started with UK and ND misses as well as 4 consecutive turnovers by the teams. UK surged to 50-31 after an old fashioned Riddick 3 and a Sheppard bank shot. Riddick was called for a block (which he really did commit), but when he fell down, he was elbowed by Williams (who got no foul). Andre was really angry when he got up, and he got into Williams' face - both players were then hit with a technical (Sheppard hit both his shots, Kurowski hit only one of his). The lead grew to 60-36 before Pope got a T for touching the ball after a made basket, and it later became 66-40 when Walker was fouled on a drive and hit 2 FTs.
Anthony Epps ran the team well, and contributed offensively in making the margin 78-47. Walker hit some FTs and Epps hit a 3 to make the score 84-56 before NBC decided "enough is enough" and cut away to golf and NBA All-Star pregame coverage. The Cats had a final run of 13-2 to make final score 97-58.
