Cats Crush a Clutch of Carolina Cocks:
The Cats had relatively little trouble in defeating South Carolina 80-55 in their first road SEC game. [JNB note - technical difficulties in the radio broadcast and poor reception in my area means I didn't hear absolutely all of the game, so this account won't be as complete as usual.]
Kentucky got off to a 9-2 start against the Gamecocks with a basket and FT by Walker and a couple of Rhodes 3s, but USC scored on a Rich layup, Russell FTs, and a Russell putback basket to close to 9-8. A Walker 3 and a Sheppard 3 moved the Cats out 20-14 (Watson added a basket for USC). When the Gamecocks closed to 23-20 on a Stack dunk, Bostick dunk, and Watson basket, the Cats surged out 29-20 on 3s by Delk. When the Gamecocks made it 30-25 after a pair of Bostick FTs, Epps and Delk gave UK a 36-25 lead which was shortened to 36-28 on a Watson layup and FT at halftime.
The second half was almost all Kentucky. UK blew out to a 42-30 lead on 3s by Rhodes and Sheppard. Continued good 3 point shooting (by Sheppard and Rhodes in particular) created a 55-36 bulge. With 10 minutes left in the game, UK was up 64-40 on a McCarty layup. A dunk and FTs by Prickett and Rhodes' FTs allowed UK to go up 69-47, and the Cats cruised to a final 80-55 margin. WHAS commentators noted that the officials appeared to allow a large amount of rough play (with Epps being hit hard in the nose and Pope being undercut with no calls, but at the same time numerous touch fouls were assessed).
