Wildcats 'Rassle a Rabble of Rowdy Raiders:

UK managed to defeat the Red Raiders of Texas Tech by a score of 83-68. But it wasn't easy, at least not at first.

Texas Tech got the ball first when Kentucky's Walter McCarty jumped too early on the initial jump ball. The Red Raiders went up 4-0 on 2 shots by Davis, and after a Ham dunk and Sasser basket, TT led 8-2. After a pair of Sasser FTs, the Red Raiders were up 10-4, and later increased this lead to 13-5 on a 3 by Smith.

Kentucky rallied a bit, with a Rhodes 3 to make the score 13-8. UK began by hitting on only 2 of its 1st 7 FG attempts. A Hughes old-fashioned 3 point play gave TT a 16-8 margin. Rhodes had a layup, Smith scored a basket, and then Kentucky began to close in after a layup by Sheppard, a drive by Prickett, and a pair of Sheppard FTs to make it 18-18. TT went back up 20-18 after Hughes dunked on a runout. Walker had a terrific assist to Prickett, who could make only 1 of 2 FTs. The Wildcat press began to bother TT after this, with Walker making a steal. UK led 21-20 on a Delk pass to Sheppard for a dunk (Sheppard started out hitting 4 of his 1st 5 FG shots). TT went back ahead 24-21 on a Hughes 3, but a Delk inside postup and 2 Rhodes FTs made it 26-25. Rhodes later had a dunk to close to 28-27. Then Anthony Epps hit a pair of FTs to put Kentucky up to stay, at 29-28. After several Delk shots and a Rhodes old-fashioned 3, UK led 36-30. Epps added a 3 to make it 39-30, and a pair of Delk baskets closed out the half while Smith and Sasser hit FTs to make it 43-33 UK at the half.

Kentucky started the second half hitting 3-4 from the floor, to build a 50-37 lead. UK surged out to a 20 point lead at 60-40 with baskets by Delk, Epps' FTs, a Riddick tap-in of a Prickett miss, and a Sheppard layup. TT came back with a couple of Sasser FTs and a Hughes layup, and then the two teams bounced between 20 and 22 point differences for a while. Texas Tech came to within 72-59 with several 3s and FTs by Hughes and a Davis tap-in. The score reached 74-62 as Sasser hit a pair of FTs. But then Rhodes hit a pair of FTs, Prickett made a pair as well, followed by McCarty, and the score reached 80-66. Epps and Rhodes contributed the final FT scoring, as did Sasser with his team's final bucket.
