Cats Vanquish a Volume of Virtual Vols:

[JNB note - this is one of the few games all year long which I could not see on TV and for which I could not hear the radio broadcast. All the information I have is from the newspapers, plus a few scenes shown on Pitino's TV show.]

This game was just about as easy for Kentucky as the Ole Miss game. Both teams stayed close for quite a while until Rodrick Rhodes let UK on a 14-0 spurt near the end of the first half. Rhodes hit a 3 pointer, then dunked inside following a Vol turnover to give the Wildcats a 43-32 lead. This was followed by two quick baskets by Andre Riddick, a 3 pointer by Tony Delk, and a short jumper by Anthony Epps, which helped Kentucky to a 52-32 lead at the half.

The Cats built up a 30 point lead at 75-45 with 10 minutes left in the second half. Tennessee then went on a 19-3 run of their own which cut the lead to 14 (at 78-64) with a little over 5 minutes to go in the contest. Kentucky responded with a McCarty dunk of a rebound, a Delk layup off a turnover, and a Martinez layup for a twenty point lead in the games final three minutes.

Poor Travis Ford is having a difficult time extending another string of free throws. He missed another one in this game!

In his weekly TV show, Coach Pitino said that although both Ole Miss and Tennessee were in the rebuilding stages, he was pleased with his team's efforts. He also announced that Rhodes will return to his usual starting role against Florida, with McCarty also starting and Jared Prickett coming off the bench. Pitino noted that Delk had as many rebounds as Rhodes for the game, and that Delk might end up as the team's leading rebounder even though he is "only" a guard. Both Rhodes and Delk had a double-double (in points and rebounding), a somewhat rare event.

Jeff Brassow did not play against Tennessee due to a split toenail on his left foot. This, in addition to the blackened eye, broken nose (from the Prickett elbow during the Georgia game), 11 stitches in his arm, a painful knee which has had 3 operations over the last two years, and now a broken toenail! Rick jokingly said that UK trainer Joann Hauser would be so thankful when Brassow finally graduates - her workload will be cut in half.

UK had an odd stroke of luck in the game, which accounts for the one basket listed as "team" below. Martinez shot and missed a 3 point shot, but the rebound struck the Tennessee player Hamer square on the head, and the ball bounced in the basket! The 2 points counts as a basket for Kentucky, but not as a shot, hence the rather odd listing of 1-0 in the FG-FGA column!
