Ruppmen Behind At Half, 23 to 13

NEW ORLEANS, La., March 21 - Sparked by little George Monroe, Dartmouth's flashy team moved to the finals of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Basketball championships by eliminating the Kentucky Wildcats here tonight, downing the Southeastern Conference champions by the decisive and surprising score of 47 to 28.

Monroe, remaining in the game constantly until the last minute of play, accounted for 20 of Dartmouth's points, with nine field goals and two foul shots. Jim Olsen also played well, but Monroe so completely dominated the court that the fine play of Olsen, Stan Skaug and Bob Myers suffered in comparison.

Dartmouth combined speed with finesse and was helped toward the uneven victory by Kentucky's loss of poise. The Wildcats finally became reckless and taking almost hopeless chances, knocked themselves out of many points.

Kentucky started with England, King and Ticco out of the lineup and Dartmouth, showing rare speed for men so big, got the jump on the Wildcats, thanks to some brilliant shooting by George Monroe, smallest man on the team.

Monroe bucketed three field goals and shot one foul and helped materially to set up a couple of nice shots which Myers and Olsen turned into field goals.

Marvin Akers seemed the only Wildcat able to play up to the form Kentucky showed Friday night and even after England, King and Ticco got into the game the Midwesterners were unable to stem the tide of Dartmouth's brilliant attack.

The Indians, extra alert on defense, time and again took the ball away from the Kentuckians and at the end of the half were outplaying Kentucky decisively as the end-of-the-half score of 23 to 13 would indicate.

The second half was even more one-sided than the first half - Marvin Akers, who played consistently well for Kentucky all night and who led his team with 11 points, continued playing well, but it was apparent that Jim King was still suffering from a crash of Friday night and that Ken England, another Kentucky mainstay was slowed up with his injured leg.
