'Cats Play Listless Ball, Lose to 'Ole Miss

The University of Kentucky Wildcat basketeers put up the poorest exhibition of the present season at the University of Kentucky gymnasium last night and lost to the University of Mississippi five by a score of 37 to 17. In a preliminary game, the Kittens, also playing lifeless ball, managed to defeat the Centre College yearlings by a 39 to 6 score, holding the visitors to one field goal and four free throws.

For some reason or other Coach Basil Hayden started his second string men against Mississippi and after the southerners had run up a 7 to 3 score on them, jerked them and substituted his first string men. They fared little better against the rangy team which Mississippi was represented by and were always in the arrears, being behind by a 20 to 9 score at the end of the half.

There is little to say for Kentucky's sake. The boys, defeated in the first half, did not try very hard in the final stanza. Without the valiant but futile efforts of Jenkins and Dees, Kentucky's predicament would have been much worse. Mississippi did not have much of a team, but enough to defeat the Wildcats, who, on the whole, seemed lifeless and possessed of no fight whatsoever.

Jimmie McFarland, coach of the freshmen, substituted so many times that the spectators got seasickness. The starting lineup seemed disorganized without Jeffries and although they had the easiest game of their career, they missed many easy shots and did not seem to be trying half of the time. Combs led the scoring for Kentucky with 12 points, while Len Miller, taking a crack at the basket once in a while, rang up eight points.

Shelton and Dakin were best for the Looies, but they were ejected from the game along with McKinney on account of an excess of personal fouls.
