Goal Shooting of McFarland Features Kentucky's Victory Over Centre
Colonels Have Tight Defense
Danville, Ky - The University of Kentucky Wildcats, jumping into a commanding lead at the start of tonight's basketball game, were never headed and triumphed over the Centre College Colonels, 33 to 27. It was the third consecutive win for the Wildcats and the first time this season that their total in points has reached 30 or more.
The Colonels were trailing the Wildcats, 21 to 15, at the end of the first half and were never closer to Applegran's outfit than four point. Five spectacular field goals by Captain McFarland in the first five minutes of the game enabled the Wildcats to grab a 12 to 2 lead, from which the Colonels could not recover. Two of McFarland's goals were shot from past the center of the court in rapid succession.
Extremely close guarding on the part of both teams kept the rivals shooting from the proximity of the foul lines. Underwood, high scorer of the contest with seven field goals, was the only player who managed to get under the basket with regularity. Kentucky's passing played a major part in the victory of the Wildcats, the Colonels being hard put to cope with this style of play.
Centre demonstrated flashes of speed throughout the scrap, while the goal shooting of both quintets was ragged at times. Four field goals by Underwood in the final half kept Kentucky in front of the Centre aggregation. Coach Applegran made three substitutions during the game, using Hughes for the first time this year in place of Milward. Rice and Tracy were also used. Grubbs was Centre's only relief man.
Carey, stationary guard for Kentucky, came through with a bang up game and was ably supported by his teammates. Summers was the individual star of the Colonels with eight points, while Woford and German each accounted for seven. Underwood and McFarland were the outstanding performers of the contest, their work being of the best that could be asked for.
